Rational AG is a German manufacturer and was founded by Siegfried Meister in 1973. The company develops and produces cooking appliances suitable (Combi steamers and oven) for cooking from 30 meals a day in large and commercial kitchens. The company is based in Landsberg am Lech , Germany. The company owns the subsidiary Frima which is based in Wittenheim/France.
Since its establishment, RATIONAL AG has grown from 18 to 1,500 employees worldwide. Around half of the employees work at the headquarters in Landsberg am Lech. The company distributes its Rational Combi steamer in more than 100 countries. Rational's share in the global market is 54 percent.[1] [2]

History

The company was founded in 1973 by the founder, entrepreneur and current Chairman of the Supervisory Board Siegfried Meister (* 1938) with 18 employees at the time. The company initially produced hot air units. These quickly superseded conventional ovens that were used in the commercial sector before then. Three years later, the developers added steam to hot air: the Rational combi steamer was born. 19 years later, Rational created a product-specific ideal climate in the cooking cabinet with Cli-maPlus-Control® technology. This level of efficiency has been unique to this date. [3] In 2000, "Rational GmbH" was converted to a stock corporation.

The change to the form of business organisation created the necessary course for the company to align itself internationally. The company now sells its products in more than 100 countries. Rational reached another milestone in the company's history in 2004 with the launch of the SelfCookingCenter®. For the first time, this cooking appliance was able to independently recog-nise the climate, cooking time, temperature and air velocity in the cooking cabinet and adjust these parameters individually to product-specific requirements. This technology was developed further and the SelfCookingCenter® whitefficiency® was launched in 2011. It was even more resource-efficient than its predecessor model, while the technical details were also more sophisticated. In 2014, Rational developed the whitefficiency® range even further with the launch of the SelfCookingCenter® 5 Senses. The product is both a combi steamer and an intelligent cooking system, which independently recognises the load quantity and size of the food, continuously monitors the cooking process and automatically adapts to the relevant food. Rational also offers its customers a classic combi steamer, the CombiMaster Plus, with which the chef can set the temperature, moisture, cooking duration and air flow manually. In order to cover the requirements of international markets, the company has established local sales companies in the following countries since 1991:[4]

United Kingdom (1991), France (1992), Japan (1992), United States (1993), Italy (1998), Scandinavia (1998), Switzerland (1999), Canada (1999), Spain (2000), Russia (2003), Austria (2005), Poland (2005), China (2007), Greece (2007), Middle East (2007), Ukraine (2007), Brazil (2009) and India (2010), Mexico ( 2012).

Rational AG is a medium-sized enterprise whose objective is to provide chefs worldwide with the best cooking tool. Siegfried Meister had already made this claim when he founded the company. To this day, this is the company's main claim and is the core of its corporate philosophy.[1] According to an internal study, almost 100 percent of Rational customers are satisfied with the appliances and would purchase another Rational product at any time. The company won the "Best of Market" award in 2013 and 2015.[5] For the SelfCookingCenter® 5 Senses, Rational was awarded the customer innovation prize in the "Technology" category in 2014. A long list of prizes is topped off by the "Germany's Most Customer-Oriented Service Provider" award in 2013. The company demonstrates its technology to customers in cooking events. These "Rational CookingLive" shows take place worldwide and enable potential purchasers to experience Rational appliances in operation. In 2014, the company generated sales of 496.7 million Euros. Net income was 97.2 million Euros. The EBIT margin of 29.2 percent is unique in the industry. The Chairman of the Supervisory Board Siegfried Meister says this success is built on the company's consistent alignment towards maximum possible customer benefit and a clear specialization in hot-food preparation.[1] Since 3 March 2010, the company has been listed in the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and moved up to the MDAX on 4 March 2009. Rational AG is currently (since 22 September 2014) listed in the SDAX.

Sustainability

The company defines sustainability as a holistic concept to be found in its own products, from which mainly the customers benefit and which is also integrated in the employees' daily routines.

Ecology

The company is continuously developing its products in order to reduce the consumption of energy, water and all resources employed in usage and production. Rational is also researching in collaboration with universities to find innovative solutions in order to continuously increase the efficiency of products. The conservation of resources is respected in distribution logistics. The company takes back old appliances and recycles them.

Social

Rational combines social commitment with treating its employees responsibly. This includes an equitable work-life balance and direct participation in the company's success. Rational also supports social and cultural activities in the region. The company supports the "United Against Waste" initiative with its own ideas such as the Finishing® cooking process. By uncoupling production and service, Finishing® is used to only heat up quantities of food that are actually required for service.

Economy

Doing business in a sustained manner with an eye to the longer term is more important than achieving quick profits. This is mainly reflected in the high customer satisfaction, solid and continuous growth and low staff turnover.

Board

The RATIONAL AG executive board consists of four members. Dr Peter Stadelmann (Chairman of the Board), Peter Wiedemann (Technical Director), Erich Baumgärtner (Commercial Director) and Markus Paschmann (Sales and Marketing Director). None of the RATIONAL board members are members of boards or have executive positions in other companies.
