Monstercat (formerly known as Monstercat Media) is a Canadian electronic dance music record label based in Vancouver, British Columbia.[1] The label was founded in July 2011 by Mike Darlington, CEO,[2][3] and Ari Paunonen, COO.[1]

Monstercat signs artists for single releases only, rather than exclusivity deals, which lets its artists retain copyright control of their song and the ability to release tracks on other record labels.[4] The label follows a cycle, releasing a track every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, in addition to an hour-long podcast that is live streamed every Tuesday at 1 PM, PST on the Monstercat Twitch.tv channel. Every 30 track releases, give or take a few, a new album is released, containing 30 tracks and two continuous mixes of the album. Releases are made available on the label's site, iTunes, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Spotify, Xbox Music, Google Play Music, Apple Music, Beatport, along with many other digital music services, and are featured on the Monstercat YouTube and Twitch channels, alternatively a small snippet of any released track are also promoted on their Facebook and Instagram pages.

History

History

In July 2011, Mike Darlington (CEO) and Ari Paunonen (COO) created Monstercat as a YouTube channel.[1] Monstercat served as a medium for Darlington and Paunonen's friends to share and promote their music.[1][2][5] The two created compilation albums to provide artists with a method of releasing their music and to lessen the competitiveness between them.[6][1] The first song on the label was "Dubstep Killed Rock 'n' Roll" by Ephixa. Monstercat's first album, Launch Week, featured seven artists: Feint, Halo Nova (now Varien), Stephen Walking, Ephixa, Neilio, Arion, and Going Quantum. Recent albums now feature upwards of 30 artists with an even larger variety of genres.[6]

Krewella Signs

In December 2011, Monstercat signed Krewella,[1][2][5] an American electronic dance music group from Chicago, Illinois. "Killin' It" was Krewella's first original song released by a label.[2][7] Monstercat promoted Krewella with social media campaigns and partnered with EDM YouTube promotional channels for a larger platform.[1] Their second song on Monstercat was a collaboration with Pegboard Nerds titled 'This Is Not The End'. The track was released during September 2013 but was only sold on Krewella's forthcoming album 'Get Wet' through Columbia Records.

2014 and onwards

In February 2014, Monstercat partnered with EDM lifestyle brand Electric Family to produce a collaboration bracelet for which 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Humane Society of Canada.[8]

In June 2014, Monstercat reached one million record sales[4] in the United States of America.

In July 2014, Monstercat announced its first official tour; "The Uncaged Tour", featuring Pegboard Nerds, Stephen Walking and Varien. The tour's locations were chosen by fan voting. 22,000 fan votes resulted in over 20 dates being booked for the tour.[9]

In September 2014, Monstercat celebrated its 3-year anniversary with a mix containing 78 of the top tracks from Monstercat's history. It was mixed by Didrick.[10]

In December 2014, Monstercat launched their 24-hour digital radio station, hosted and streamable on Twitch.tv.[11]

As of August 2015, Monstercat is now the 7th most subscribed YouTube channel in Canada, gaining 3.6 million subscribers and 732.1 million channel views.[12]
