Reception

The news of the series' pick up has already attracted attention and controversy before it hits the small screen. On the day it was announced that was added to the ABC network schedule (May 12, 2015), religious groups, such as the American Family Association and the Family Research Council have called for a boycott and petition to prevent the series from airing. The Media Research Center, a conservative media watchdog group, has received over 10,000 signatures to force ABC to remove the show from the schedule. They also cite Savage's views on religion, sexuality, and marriage equality, which they stated was infused into the series because it was based on his life, but Savage notes that the concept went in a different direction.[5]
