AhlulBayt News Agency abbreviated ABNA is an Iranian online news aggregator based in Qom. It was launched in March 15, 2005, by authorities of the Ahl Al-Bayt World Assembly. It's coverage includes issues concerning Shiite communities in Asia, Africa, Europe, America and other parts of the world. It gained a lot of following during the Arab spring therefore was banned in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain for casting news about regional protests.[1]

History

ABNA was launched in 2005 in the form of a primary Shia news outlet to deal with biased mass media coverage, often lack of coverage, of Shiite communities. The importance of this issue made the current Secretary General of the Ahl Al-Bayt World Assembly Hujjatol-Islam Mohammad Hasan Akhtari to recognize the need for an exclusive news website dedicated only to the developments of the Shiite communities around the world.

For that reason it was decided to build an online platform meant to spread the news concerning Shiites by raising the awareness of them and other religious global minorities that were mostly under-reported. So The first ABNA went online under the name Shianews.

In the summer of 2006, with an optimistic vision, ABNA received a professional management team to introduce it in a new interface which was more fitting and easy-to-use. At this point, more domains were also assigned for the site.

In August 2007 a new phase was kicked off due to the amount of attention the website gained, making it one of the most famous Shiite news websites on the net. At this moment, ABNA changed both its domain and its title to AhlolBayt News Agency and Abna24.com, managing to access a wider range of visitors from some Arab and western countries that had restrictions with ir domain. Subsequently, and by the inauguration of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, ABNA became an official news agency operating in 20 languages with full-time employees.[2]

Agenda

People in ABNA are given the task to constantly observe the developments in Iraq, Syria, Nigeria and other areas where an active conflict is going on against minorities (including non-Shias), report on them and so let people share them via social media. They try to do it equally in order to avoid being labeled bigoted in their approach.[3]

ABNA is awarded many times during festivals in Iran. In 2012 ABNA won a prize for being the best online news agency from the 19th International Press Exhibition.[4]
