Mastroianni or mastrojanni or mastroyanni is a family name of greek origin. Mastro - yannis (greek: Μαστρο - γιάννης) means Yannis or Iannis (greek: Γιάννης, Ιωάννης) the craftsman. The lack of gamma in italian/english cause this trouble. Both Mastroianni/Mastrojanni and even Mastroyanni are correct from language percepective. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 143.215.52.10 (talk) 00:43, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Add O Melissokomos (The Beekeeper) to article
First time editing anything here, I'll try to but if I can't someone should add Theo Angelepolous' 1986 film O Melissokomos (The Beekeeper) to Mastroianni's filmography.

According to the IMdB, Mastroianni's birth name was "Marcello Vincenzo Domenico Mastrojanni". It seems weird to me, as j is normally not used in Italian. Could someone please check if it is correct? Thanks, SyP 09:18, 14 September 2006 (UTC) (please reply to me either here or at hu:User vita:Syp.[reply]

Secondo ad IMdB, Mastroianni è nato con il nome "Marcello Vincenzo Domenico Mastrojanni". Che sappia io la lettera j generalmente non è usata in italiano. Andate a fondo di questo domanda, per cortesia! Grazie, SyP 09:18, 14 September 2006 (UTC) (Rispondatemi qua o a hu:User vita:Syp).[reply]

Marcello Vincenzo Domenico Mastrojanni" is the birth-name, Marcello Mastroianni is his actor-name; i've just changed it. - Daviduzzu

Someone has rolled back.....But I repeat, that "Mastrojanni" is the right form! - Daviduzzu

"J" is used in Italian, mainly in words or names that come from various dialects. Given names like Jacopo are common, or surnames like Jannuzzi, Jorio, or even town names like Jesi, Jesolo. --Gspinoza (talk) 15:51, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Recently Catherine Deneuve visited Greece and said that Mastroianni used to say to her that he was of Greek origin. Maybe this is the explanation for the "j". See Makriyannis. Greco22 (talk) 11:56, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture?

Not one picture can be found for this famous actor? --1000Faces (talk) 04:52, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Plenty of photos can be found. Just none so far that have sufficiently free licences. Dl2000 (talk) 05:07, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
We really should try and find a "sufficiently free" picture of Mastroianni in his younger days. Alexthe5th (talk) 05:42, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Russian Jewish mother

What does the cited source say on this? It's an exceptional claim that doesn't match the old references on Marcello. "His mother, Ida Idelson who was of Jewish descent, was born in 1898 in Minsk, Belarus, and moved with her parents 1906 to Germany and later to Italy. - Enzo Biagi: "La bella vita Marcello Mastroianni racconta" - " All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 19:22, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No idea. According to the Italian Wikipedia page on Mastroianni both his parents were natives of the town of Arpino, Italy. There is nothing about supposed Jewish ancestry either. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.127.183.128 (talk) 14:02, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mastroianni vs. Mastrojanni

It seems that the last name of Mastroianni and Mastrojanni are sometimes one and the same. My great grandfather was Antonio Mastroianni from Castiglione. In his marriage records his surname is Mastroianni, but when I find his birth records his father and his last names are listed as Mastrojanni, but the birth year and month, as well as his mothers name (and his fathers first name of Biase) are the same as all the records under Mastroianni. So Marcello most likely was born as Marcello Mastrojanni, and his name was later changed to Mastroianni. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.51.184.11 (talk) 22:26, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
