Season 8
At this point in the progression of the Seasons of Stargate SG-1, the show was supposed to end, to be replaced with the spin-off series Stargate Atlantis, which begins where the SG-1 Season 7 left off. However, SG-1 was not cancelled. From Season 8 onwards, however, there are frequent references to the plot, or at least the pilot, of Stargate Atlantis. All that needs to be understood is that the Lost City of the Ancients was indeed found - a city called Atlantis (which founded the Earth-based myth) - on a planet in the Pegasus Galaxy which requires a ZPM to reach.

Season 9
After the climax of Season 8, the producers of the show were unsure of whether or not SG-1 would continue. However, after it was indeed renewed for Season 9, with both the Goa'uld and Replicators defeated the show adopted a more powerful enemy, a revived style, and an overall new atmosphere. This season is also marked by the departure of Richard Dean Anderson. The show is still dealing with what it is to be a god, or what it is to deserve worship, as one of its main themes. In addition, Season 9 begins greater intertwining with the plot of Stargate Atlantis.

DVD box-set of SG-1 Season 3.

The plot of Stargate SG-1 follows directly from the plot of the 1994 movie Stargate. In many cases, knowledge of the events of the film is required to understand the happenings of Stargate SG-1, and as such a brief outline is given here.

Template:Spoiler

In the story of the film, an ancient artifact of alien design (the eponymous Stargate) was found in Giza, and discovered to be capable of teleportation across the galaxy. Brilliant Egyptologist Daniel Jackson, Colonel Jack O'Neill and other recruits travel to the planet Abydos and free its people from the alien oppressor Ra, who had used Stargates to transport human slaves to many worlds for thousands of years, posing as a god. O'Neill returns to Earth without the newly betrothed Jackson, and there the Stargate program is shut down.[1]

The plot of Stargate SG-1 begins one year after O'Neill's return[2], and continues to develop in order through the episode list, in a sequential chronological order.

The first eight seasons of Stargate SG-1 are available for purchase on DVD. See Stargate SG-1 DVD for more information.
