Test Drive Unlimited is a street racing video game containing licensed cars and motorcycles on 1000 miles of roads and highways on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.

Summary

In Test Drive Unlimited, the player is able to go both onroad and offroad, challenging racers they encounter. Oahu is modeled to within a metre of detail of its real life counterpart, as the developers have used satellite imaging for precision modeling[citation needed]. The terrain will differ from rainforest and mountains to sandy beaches and Hawaii's capital city, Honolulu.

Single player consists of varying missions around Oahu, against NPCs, and against the clock. Some player customisation is present, as is the ability to purchase your own house and garage. Police are also present, and will chase you in races if you bump them or gain too much speed.

Test Drive Unlimited contains online multiplayer where players are able to compete against each other, or join the game's persistent online racing world. Players can also engage in build communities by creating or joining clubs to talk, trade cars, and race. Division-based rankings will help separate the hardcore gamers from the casual ones.

Players can acquire a total of 125 sports cars from manufacturers including Lamborghini, Audi, Dodge, Pagani, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Lotus, TVR, Jaguar and Saleen. All vehicles are rendered to reflect their real-world counterparts, similar to Project Gotham Racing 3, with interior detail boasting full car functionality, including windows and engine revs. Players can also customise their vehicles with parts and accessories from the actual manufacturers' catalogues. New cars can be downloaded via Xbox Live, similar to Project Gotham Racing 2 and 3's Booster Packs. So far, there are two new cars available for download: the Nissan Skyline R34, and Audi RS4 Quattro. Both are free of charge. However, they must be purchased from the dealer.

M.O.O.R.

M.O.O.R stands for Massively Open Online Racing, a new term created for Test Drive Unlimited. Similar to MMORPGs, when playing online, the entire island of Oahu is populated with up to 1000 other players. As there is such a large number of other users, a filter has been introducted. With the filter on, you can only see the seven players closest to you that match your filter's criteria. This criteria can be a certain car make, friends, clan members, people in your skill level, etc. You are also be able to challenge any other player in the game by driving up to them, and trade or auction your vehicles online. The police will remain in the online play as well.

In its game review, Yahoo! Games described Test Drive Unlimited as "One of the best value games for the Xbox 360, Atari's open-ended racer features a slick multiplayer and a great interface.", giving it 4 out of 5 stars score. [1]

Although the game proclaims to be an exact depiction of the Hawaiian island, numerous government buildings (such as those on Pearl Harbor, Camp H. M. Smith, and Hickam Air Force Base), commercial buildings (Ala Moana Center, the entire commercial strip in Pearl City), and notable landmarks (statue of King Kamehameha I, etc.) have been left out of the game and replaced with trees or regular houses. This may be due to legal issues in regards to advertising or not enough space in the game engine due to the size of the island.
