archive.is (formerly archive.today) is an archive site which stores snapshots of web pages.[2] It retrieves one page at a time similar to WebCite, smaller than 50 MB each, but with Google Maps and Twitter included. Hostkey is the primary host (servers in Amsterdam and Moscow)[3], distributed by Cloudflare.[4][5]
archive.is uses headless browsing to record what embedded resources need to be captured to provide a high-quality memento, and creates a PNG image to provide a static and non-interactive visualization of the representation.[6]
Unlike crawlers such as Wayback Machine, archive.is only captures individual pages in response to explicit user requests, and so does not obey the robots exclusion standard.[7] Because of this, website owners cannot unilaterally remove snapshots at will, thus it is a "permanent" archive.[8]
Since July 2013, archive.is supports the Memento Project application programming interface (API),[9][10] and Chrome and Firefox extensions.
Worldwide availability
On July 21, 2015, the operators blocked access to the service from all Finnish IP addresses, stating on Twitter that they did this in order to avoid escalating a dispute they allegedly had with the Finnish government.[11]
Russia
In Russia, only HTTP access is possible; HTTPS connections are blocked.[12][13]
Archiving
Saving a web page to archive.is can be accomplished by:
- Entering the URL of the page to be archived on the archive.is home page.
- Prepending the encoded URL of the page to be archived with https://archive.is/?run=1&url= (e.g., in a web browser address bar).
- Clicking a bookmarklet on a web browser toolbar. (archive.is publishes a suitable bookmarklet.)
- Use of a third-party browser extension.[14][15][16]
- Use API for Python,[17] Go[18] and Node.js.[19]
- Share of a web page from an Android web browser to an Android app that opens it in archive.is.[20]
