Chenani-Nashri Tunnel, also known as Patnitop Tunnel, is a road tunnel in the Indian state Jammu and Kashmir on NH 44 (former name NH 1A before renumbering of all national highways).

It is India's longest road tunnel with a length of 9.2 km (5.7 mi). The tunnel's construction is expected to cost 37.2 billion (US$450 million). [1]

The tunnel will reduce the distance between Chenani and Nashri from 41 km (25.5 mi) to 11 km (6.8 mi). Snowfall and avalanche in winter at Patnitop obstructs NH 44 a few times every winter and causes long queues of vehicles - sometimes for days at length. The tunnel will bypass Patnitop, Kud, and Batote and will reduce traffic jams on NH 44 in winter.

Location

The Southern portal (end) of the tunnel is at 33°02′47″N 75°16′45″E / 33.0463°N 75.2793°E / 33.0463; 75.2793 and the Northern portal (end) of the tunnel is at coordinates 33°07′43″N 75°17′34″E / 33.1285°N 75.2928°E / 33.1285; 75.2928. The tunnel has been excavated starting from about 2 km (1 mi) from Chenani town south of Patnitop to Nashri village north of Patnitop.

Status

As of Feb 2017, the tunnel was in the final stages of testing and certification, and was expected to be commissioned in March 2017. [2]
