Club Penguin Island is a massively-multiplayer online role-playing game for mobile devices. It is the successor to Club Penguin.[1] The game was released worldwide on March 29, 2017.[2]
The game's public beta testing period took place in Australia and New Zealand from December 15, 2016 to its worldwide release, and in Canada from January 13, 2017 to its worldwide release.[3][4]
With many players mad about the new game and the Apple Store rating of Club Penguin Island mostly negative, Many viewers questioned Disney's choice in discontinuing the old Club Penguin. [citation needed]
History
The game was originally known under the codename of Project: Super Secret, which was teased in July 2015. On November 17, 2016, the project was revealed to be Club Penguin Island.[5]
The game's closed beta took place between its announcement and December 2016 in North America.[6]
A semi-private "geo-beta" took place in Australia and New Zealand between December 15, 2016 to its worldwide release.[3] This beta was extended to iOS users in Canada on January 13, 2017.[4]
The original Flash game's servers went offline on the day of the game's release, on March 30, 2017, at 12:01 AM PDT (7:01 AM UTC).[7]
Gameplay
The game's gameplay is similar to that of the original Club Penguin, though it runs on a three-dimensional game engine rather than Adobe Flash Player.[5]
Reception
The game has received criticism from fans of the original game for being a replacement for the original. Fans have protested against Club Penguin's closure, and have prompted not to play Club Penguin Island. Despite this however, there was still a small minority of fans excited for the release of Club Penguin Island. During the app's soft launch, the game has been criticized for having a lack of "non-member content", and a huge lack of the features the original Club Penguin had. Club Penguin Island was also bad-mouthed by many viewers of Club Penguin at the time because it would soon replace the original game, and how the game played nothing like the original. It also currently has a lot of glitches, although it has been out in Canada since January 18, 2017[8]
Initial reviews for Club Penguin Island were mixed, soon becoming more and more negative later on.[citation needed], possibly due to how most positive reviews came from people who haven't played the original game, while most reviews from fans were mostly negative[citation needed]. At the time of release, Club Penguin Island had a score of 3.5/5 on the Google Play Store, dropping to 2.7/5 one day after its release.[2]
The game however, currently still had a small minority of viewers who were fans of the original Club Penguin, yet most of the game's fan base were primarily people who haven't played the original Club Penguin game. Most viewers of the original game however, have inconsistenly bad mouthed Club Penguin Island, even while playing the game itself, saying that Disney "ruined their childhood" and have said bad things towards Club Penguin Island and Disney itself. Some fans stay positive about the game however, considering that the game will be updated to a much better state.
