Dainese (pronounced dye-ee-neh-zeh) is an Italian manufacturer of protective wear for dynamic sports, including motorcycling, mountain biking, wintersports and horseriding. It describes its mission as “to advocate and deliver safety in dynamic sports”.[1] The company was founded in 1972 by its current President Lino Dainese, now a minority stakeholder in the company,[2] expanding through organic growth and acquisitions, including Italian helmet manufacturer AGV (2007)[3] and Swedish protective bike and ski clothing manufacturer POC (2015)[4]. Investcorp acquired a majority shareholding in the Dainese Group in 2014. [5]

Product Range

The Dainese Group has a declared objective of offering “protection from head to toe”.[6] The former is covered by the AGV brand with Dainese itself producing suits, jackets, shock-absorbing armor and back protectors, pants, boots, gloves and sundry accessories.[7] The materials used range from traditional cowhide and kangaroo skin to aramid, carbon fiber and titanium. The range encompasses off-the-rack, made-to-measure and custom products[8].

History

Lino Dainese

Lino Dainese started the company in 1972 when he was 20, making protective motorcycle apparel in Molvena (Vicenza).[9] The first article of clothing was a pair of motocross pants.[10] The company has been closely associated with motorcycle racing since its foundation, which has informed its product development, focused on safety, performance and ergonomics.[11]

The company acquired the Italian helmet manufacturer AGV in July 2007.[12]

The Dainese Group was acquired by Investcorp of Bahrain for €130 million in 2014. Lino Dainese retains a minority holding and continues to guide the Group as President.[13]

Expanding its safety mission from motorcycling to dynamic sports in general, Dainese acquired the Swedish protective bike and ski clothing manufacturer POC in 2015.[14]

The Group’s Headquarters are in Italy, as are its Research & Development and Design Centers. These are supported by a United States division, with offices in California, and an office in Hong Kong.[15]

Research & Innovations

Dainese has its own specialist research facility, the Dainese Technology Centre (D-Tec),[16] which develops innovative protection and apparel-related technologies for the Group companies and varied other applications. The latter include a gravity load simulating suit for the International Space Station[17] developed for the European Space Agency. A recent example of the former is the D-air® suit and jacket airbag system developed for motorcycle racing, which achieves ultrarapid deployment without needing any vehicle-mounted sensors.[18] The technology has been developed into a Dainese sub-brand which includes the D-air Armor open-platform undersuit[19] as well as solutions for motorcycle road use[20] and competitive skiing.[21]

Innovations from the company’s history include:

Giacomo Agostini (2003)

Dainese has used racing sponsorship to research and develop new technologies from its earliest years, recruiting the world’s leading riders. One of the first was 15-time World Champion Giacomo Agostini, who began racing in Dainese leathers in 1975.[44] Multiple World Championship Winner Valentino Rossi is currently among the best-known racers to wear the brand colors.[45] [46] In a partnership with Regenesi that combines its racing commitment with environmental responsibility, Dainese launched "Moto-re-cycling in 2014, repurposing Dainese sponsored riders' leathers as personal accessories.[47]
