Enterprise Plots

I just wanted to say a quick thank you for the work you've been doing copyediting those plots. It'll be great to get them all standardised! Miyagawa (talk) 14:02, 20 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. I am probably one of the few fans who haven't seen all of Enterprise yet, and luckily am now able to update plots within minutes of viewing them. I have systematically edited all 70+ plots in the entire series to this point, although that was spread out over a couple of years. Some of them were god awful messes, some copy/pasted directly from other websites, some were fan rants about every single nuance, but a few were pretty tight. The recent burst of editing links to the episodic nature of Series 3. When I get to the end of Series 4, I will probably go back to the start and "re-standardise" those sometime as well.Jabberjawjapan (talk) 23:54, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Update - I am in the process of copyediting the 98th and final episode now, meaning all 4 seasons are effectively "standardised" to the general criteria I have specified below.Jabberjawjapan (talk) 09:11, 22 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ST:ENT Plot Standards

Speaking of standardised, some personal rules of thumb I use for consistency are:

  • Ideally a lean mean plot should be approx. 3x100-110 word paragraphs (though I usually don't count words - you can normally sense if a plot is sufficiently succinct and detailed). Series 1-3 are now all 3 paragraphs (I used to have a 4 paragraph rule [Series 1 and 2] but after bumping into a few of your "Good Articles" in Series 3, namely "Exile", I noted that 3 seems to be the magic number... i.e. intro/conflict/resolution).
  • I liked the way Series 3's plots provide "as per episode XYZ" continuity. I have begun to include this style in my edits.
  • In the plot, main characters don't need to be identified by full name and actor's name every time - embedded wikilinks at the first mention of a character will lead the reader there.
  • The same for guest characters (since their details appear a few centimetres away in the Infobox, and often elsewhere in the article).
  • For brevity, characters are indicated by (rank)(primary name [wikilinked]) on the first instance, then subsequently by (primary name) only.
  • Guest actors/staff with red wikilinks should have the red links removed (rationale - if they haven't become famous enough in the 10+ years after the series finished, then they are unlikely to be). Further, I use "1.2 Avoiding creation of certain types of red links" as a guide.
  • I have recently started to use the guides at startrek.com as a source to check that the main plot nuances are included...
  • Preferred Spelling/Capitals: Enterprise; Tucker; Sato; the Captain; Doctor; Lieutenant; Sub-Commander; Sickbay; Engineering; Cargobay; the Bridge; shuttlepod; warp 2;
Sounds good - I'll aim to use the similar standard when expanding articles from other ST series. Miyagawa (talk) 12:47, 26 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My only concern now is that with them all standardised, is that they will slowly destandardise again... In fact it's already starting (eg. - The Augments is now 4 paragraphs (all 90+ others are 3), and informal terms for crew-members (such as "Trip") are re-emerging)... Some of the material you included in the above article was copied from http://preservationvirginia.org/press-room/release/dr_jim_horne, a copyright web page. Copying text directly from a source is a copyright violation. Unfortunately, for copyright reasons, the content had to be removed. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you think I made a mistake. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 22:23, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
