Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology University, informally Thapar University, formerly Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, is an institute deemed to be university that was founded in 1956 by Karam Chand Thapar and is situated in Patiala. It was granted full autonomy and the status of deemed-to-be-university by the University Grants Commission in 1985.

National Assessment and Accreditation Council, an autonomous body funded by UGC, has accredited Thapar University with 'A Grade'. On 24 November 2014, Thapar University signed an agreement with Trinity College, Dublin, as part of its efforts to impart global standard education at its campus in Patiala.

In November 2017, Thapar University unveiled a new identity and a logo. The new logo is a colour palette simplification of ‘maroon’ and ‘platinum’. This reductionist method of design with only two colours in logo gives each individual colour the space to shine. The dark red or maroon stands for relentless passion while platinum reflects strong legacy and global standards.[1]

Campus

The campus is housed in a 250 acre land in the heart of Patiala and has six old academic blocks, namely A, B, C, D, E, F and a recently constructed TAN block. The old building of Thapar Polytechnic College has been converted into an academic block named G. The blocks are well constructed with greenery interspersed between them. The university campus has six hostels for boys. Each hostel has a gym, a reading room and a common room. There is a cooperative mess system in each hostel, and a student executive committee headed by the warden to manage day-to-day hostel activities.

  • Hostel -A(Capacity: 252)
  • Hostel -B(Capacity: 282)
  • Hostel -C(Capacity: 320)
  • Hostel -H(Capacity: 480)
  • Hostel-J(Capacity: 942)
  • Hostel-E(Capacity : 237)
  • Hostel-PG(Capacity: 288)
  • Hostel -I(Capacity: 407)

The University in the year 2016 inaugurated two new boys hostel - Hostel K (Capacity: 600) and Hostel l (Capacity: 300). These new hostels are served by Sodexo.
2018 will see the inauguration of 3 new buildings - Lecture Hall Complex, Computer Block and the new Library which has been designed by McCullough Mulvin Architects of Ireland. [2]

The campus boasts of an in-house market COS (Cultural Open-air Sports) complex which has variety of shops where one can eat, drink, get his/her laundry done and buy stationery items.

Academics

The institute offers undergraduate programmes leading to Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree and postgraduate programmes leading to Master of Engineering (M.E.), Master of Software Engineering, Master of Technology (M.Tech.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Computer Applications (M.C.A.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), and Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degrees. Students have to take the Jee-main exam to get admission into Thapar University for the undergraduate program and students take the MET exam for admission into graduate/postgraduate programmes. This University is one of the very few institutes of higher learning in India whose some of its courses have been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) of ABET.
