Hello, my name is Athina Mitchell. I am a Communication Studies major at SUNY Plattsburgh. I was present during the live video call we had with you in Doctor Kirsten Isgro's class, but didn't have any questions at the time.

I need help with:

Making sure what I added to the article on "Emotional Intelligence" is aesthetically and intellectually sound. I underlined any changes I made to the original article. The article is already well put together, and my goal is to make it (at least) slightly better.

Need help request from Splacanica (talk)

Hello.

I need help with the "Draft" section of the group sandbox "Dec150". Can you look over the quality of this section, its accuracy, authorship, and proper sourcing? For the end of the "Scalar Implicature" section in the "Draft" section, I need to add the same citation as [3] but I am not sure how to add this. This is why on the bottom you'll see that [3] and [4] are the same source. Thank you so much for all of your help!

  • Hi Splacanica. With the sourcing, make sure that the claims in the article are explicitly made in the source material. This also extends to the examples given, so rather than list specific examples I'd make the content more general or use an example in the source material, stating something along the lines of "In an example given by Thomas Holtgraves..." or "Examples of this include giving more information than is needed in a conversation." (I prefer the ones like you posted, but I also wanted to let you know about the other option.) The issue here is that the example and explanation as to how the example works can be seen as original research.
I'd also recommend that you list some of the maxims at the end of the first sentence in the conversational implicatures section. This can help make it a bit clearer for people coming in without a really good grasp on the topics.
Also, avoid using class notes. These are generally not seen as reliable on Wikipedia because the site requires a fairly rigorous editorial process that classroom notes typically don't receive. Reasons for this include that they're not written and reviewed for any audience outside of the classroom, as well as that these notes are rarely used in academic or scholarly papers as an authoritative source.
I've done a little editing to the draft as far as markup language goes (ie, numbers and such) and I've also removed the signature from the sections. I hope that doesn't mess you up any - it's just that live articles won't contain this. You can re-add it, of course, just make sure that it's not there when it moves live. Other than that, this looks good. I like that you're adding definitions to the section - those are always helpful and it looks like the conversational section doesn't really have a clear definition in it. I need help with...

1.) I would like some help formatting my citation so that the source for references 4 and 5 in my sandbox does not appear twice in the reference list.

2.) I don't feel that I have a good sense of what belongs in which section. Do you think the information I included in my proposal to the lead section is appropriate? I've read over the Lead Section help article, but I'm still not convinced I'm on the right track.

  • Hi Helen.r, are you editing via VisualEditor? If not, then you can get it by following these directions. I recommend VisualEditor because it's a lot easier as far as editing goes, especially when making a repeated citation.
As far as repeated citations go, with Visual Editor all you have to do is highlight the source (the number that looks like this: [1]), copy it by pressing CTRL and C, then paste it in the desired location (CTRL and V). In source mode it's a little more difficult since you have to "name" the source. This means that instead of having the tag "<ref>" at the front of the source, you would instead have something like "<ref name=":3">" or "<ref name=":Smith">" in front of the source, so that it looks like this:

Other than that, I did want to caution you about using Niamh McCombe's work as a source. It's not that it's bad, just that since it's a paper written by someone going for a Bachelor's. Typically the only papers like this that are considered to be a reliable source are doctoral theses, as they undergo a fairly rigorous editorial process since they have to go by the doctoral board. Undergraduate papers and even graduate papers typically don't have that sort of oversight, even with a supervisor. I would avoid using it as a source and instead look at Niamh's sourcing to see where she got her material from and use that instead.
I did create a small draft of sorts from what you had in your draftspace to see what it would look like as a whole, as the content wouldn't be added to the article as bulletpoints. Your content is good, however some of it seems too specific for the lead paragraph and would instead be more suited for adding to the career section. This section is definitely in need of some organization and it doesn't look like the material you cover in your additions is really in the section as far as I can see. For it to have received that much attention, it definitely needs to be added. I think that you could pretty much add it "as is" into the section, with only a few tweaks to the first sentence for flow. As far as leads go, they're supposed to be very general overviews of the article topic (in this case a person) and shouldn't go too much into specifics. I have been looking at the authorship of the Wiki article labeled "Interrogation". Since I haven't really been adding any new content, but rather been filtering through possible citation errors and plagiarism, I was wondering if the Sandbox would still be a good place to work on this article. I understand Wikipedia's plagiarism rules apply to the Sandbox as well, and since checking authorship requires that I copy and paste what has already been seemingly plagiarized, I am reluctant to use the Sandbox. Please let me know if I can work in the Sandbox, or if I should work through a Word Doc, until I filter out the citation errors and plagiarism.

  • Hi God6181996, I don't see where there are any plagiarism tags on the article. I ran the article through Earwig's Copyvio Detector and while it came up plagiarism likely, it looks like the websites it brought up took the material from the Wikipedia article as opposed to it being vice-versa. I think that it would be OK for you to work on a copy of this in your sandbox.   • Hi Jaimedepaola, I'm not entirely sure what will be added exactly, but my main notes are this:
  1. Make sure that everything is sourced very well with the highest possible sourcing, which is typically academic and scholarly sources.
  2. With examples, choose ones from source material or base your examples on examples given in the source. I wouldn't base your examples on comments made in news sources, as this would be seen as original research unless your sourcing explicitly uses those comments as an example. I'd also avoid using comments made in very controversial cases or events unless you have very good sourcing to justify its use and it's written very neutrally.
  3. Be careful of writing in essay style. With essays it's common to use a persuasive, more casual style, which clashes with the editing style Wikipedia uses. Essays also tend to have lengthier, fuller descriptions and explanations, whereas Wikipedia is supposed to be more of a brief summary of a topic. The proposed additions in your section and the one in Rheatata's brush against the essay style, so they could be tightened a little for tone and brevity. It's not bad, but it just needs a little more work to make it briefer and to make sure that it doesn't come across as you arguing a point. Also, make sure that the content is sourced and any opinions or claims are attributed to a specific person.

  • Hi Averyfieldx, have you set up an appointment with your university's research librarian? They would be an invaluable resource for this, as they would have access to your library's databases and holdings. I can't search your library's website, so my help is fairly limited. What I would suggest is that you try searching the library's law databases, as well as linguistic and language oriented databases like Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts and Ethnologue. I'd avoid using a basic Google search, as that can pull up a lot of content that wouldn't really be considered reliable sources. There's Google Scholar, but to be honest it'd be vastly inferior to what the research librarian could pull up. I found some things like this, this, and this, but I don't know that they're really what you're looking for.
If you want to look on your own through the databases that's fine as well - I would just search using qualifiers - these are seen as quotation marks placed around a specific phrase that tells the search engine to look for that specific phrase. For example, using "speech acts" tells the engine that you want to look for that phrase, rather than anything that has the words speech and acts in it individually. Need Help with Media Addition

Hi Shalor, I think I fixed my previous issue with the peer review request and posted it on the right page. All seems well now. But for my article, [Dominique Morisseau], I would like to add a picture of the person to the info box but I'm having trouble figuring out how without violating the media rules. This author is still living and I am in contact with her. She has sent me a photo that I have permission to post but I don't own the copyright.   • Hi Jlingreen, Ms. Morisseau would have to upload the photograph herself, as in order to upload the image she would have to issue it under a specific copyright. Can you direct her to this page: Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials, especially the section on what it means to donate an image. The reason for this is that in many cases the copyright owner (presumably Ms. Morisseau) doesn't want the image to be under a Creative Commons license in order to protect how the image is used, especially if it's something they use commercially. Another thing to take into consideration is that sometimes the person in the image doesn't own the image's copyrights, such as in the case of a theater taking a photograph of someone. Post assignment assessment

Hi Shalor, Thank you for your comments on Sewinginthepast's talk page and for monitoring this more generally. I did indicate to my students A) that the GA status was optional and that B) it took some follow-through that would be far beyond the assignment. I did want to provide them with something, however, that would throw their edits back to the larger community so that they could possibly get feedback from anyone interested. Am I right in thinking that WP:PR would only be worth while if the editor was still sticking around to work? Because the project has already ended, this didn't make sense to suggest. Instead, I offered them some extra points if they did throw the article up to the relevant wikiproject for reassessment (I showed them how to find the places to do so within each wikiproject). Does this sound reasonable?

I also did float the potential option, if they wanted to stick around for it and if the article seemed to be at the point where it was warranted, that they could post a GA, but I didn't stress the commitment involved sufficiently.   • Hi Adriraylyn5, I saw that your draft was moved to Draft:Israel_Sends_African_Migrants_West_Under_New_United_Nations_Deal. My concern here is that the article looks more like it's something that is meant to go in an existing article. My recommendation here is to revise the draft so that it's a little less specific to this one particular case of African migrants/refugees in Israel. I suggest focusing on African refugees in Israel in general and renaming the article to "African refugees in Israel". This means that the lead could be something like this:
Around the early 21st century African refugees began migrating to Israel in search of asylum.
You could add in some basic information that you'll go into more depth with later. One of the biggest things to be careful about is that this doesn't turn into a passion piece for the refugees. No matter how horrible the things are that you may describe in an article, the article must be written in a neutral format that doesn't show favor for either side. Any words that may be seen as inherently non-neutral must be clearly attributed to a specific person or outlet. Also, you need to create in-line citations in the article to show exactly which source is backing up which claim so it can be verified.

Reuse citation

Hello Shalor!

I've reviewed how to reuse a citation within a section, but I am not able to find the 'reuse' button that is supposed to be found under the 'cite' tab. Can you explain to me how I can use one resource to cite several parts of information.

  • Hi Courtlove - are you using VisualEditor or are you editing in source mode? (If not, use these directions to enable it for your account.) If you're using VisualEditor then all you have to do is highlight the source, copy it using CTRL and C, then paste it where you want the source to go by pressing CTRL and V. My pleasure. I do recognize that some admins get a little bit too trigger-happy with the speedy deletion function — but in principle if there's a potentially valid notability claim being made in an article, then the matter of whether the sourcing is solid or not isn't actually a speedy criterion in and of itself, and instead we have to go to AFD precisely so that there's at least a full week of opportunity to fix the problem. And, of course, some people take the AFD nomination as a personal affront, and either lose motivation or start getting disruptive in a misguided attempt at revenge. So it's always nice to see somebody take the nomination in good faith and work constructively to improve the article — that's always a very welcome, winning outcome to an AFD. Hello, I'm in the Topography of Rome Spring 2018 class. I am wondering how to insert a location map and/ or sidebar box into an article? The Italian version of my article (https://it.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ipogeo_di_Vibia&oldid=87500971) has useful ones and I would like to include that in the English version which I am creating (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:SelinaLee/Hypogeum_of_Vibia#References).

I am also curious what to do when you can't find many photos of your monument with reliable sources. I have found one photo (the one on the Italian page) which has no link to its proper site anymore. Do I have to look elsewhere?

  • Hi SelinaLee! With the infobox, that infobox can be found at Template:Infobox ancient site, however I've gone ahead and put some of this together for you and placed it on your draft. The way to create the map in the infobox is by putting the coordinates in the proper field - I used the coordinates you already had in your draft for this. As far as images go, that can be tricky. You can try searching with the Creative Commons image search, however with that always make sure to double check the image's license if you find anything. If there's no license on it, assume that it's not usable. With images that do have licenses listed, compare them against the list here. While the page states that it's focused on Flickr images, the guideline for what can be uploaded can be applied to images taken from elsewhere as well.   • Hi {{u|Gsv82)), I made some slight tweaks for flow. The edits look great - the only thing that I'm hesitant about would be the quote. Need help with citations

Hello Shalor, I could really use your help. I am trying to post my article updates to the Buddhism and euthanasia main page, but my citations do not accompany it because for some reason, the numbering for the citations is off in my Sandbox. I am not really sure how to resolve the issue and could really use some assistance. I was thinking of simply deleting the other citations to allow the numbers to correct themselves, but want to ensure that this will resolve the problem before I do it so that I do not lose any other information pertaining to the other citations in my Sandbox.   • Hi Jawner22, I think that it was messing up because there were several instances of {{reflist}} templates. In any case, I've tweaked this for you. When copying over, make sure that both pages are in edit mode. As far as content goes, however, I am concerned over the last section since it comes across as your personal opinion on euthanasia - namely that hospice is preferable. You need to make sure that the article is neutrally written and that when opinions are in the article, that it's attributed to a specific person - in other words, the only opinions on the page should be from sourcing.   • Hi Jasmine.tsui! Ideally you'd go with the best source of the two, which in this case looks like it'd probably be the one you haven't read. However if you're unable to access that source it should be OK to use the one that you're read. Just make sure that the source is reliable. Out of curiosity, which sources are these? As far as editing citations go, you should be able to edit the citation by clicking on it while in edit mode with VisualEditor.
