Allama Sultan Zauq Nadvi (Bengali: আল্লামা সুলতান যওক নদভী) is a world renowned Islamic Scholar of Bangladesh and the founder of Jamia Darul Ma'arif Al-Islamia[2][3][4][5]. He is worldwide well-known mainly for his expertise in and contribution to Arabic language and literature.[6][7]

Education

Sultan Zauq Nadwi completed Dawra-e Hadith from Al-Jamiah Al-Islamiah Patiya in 1959. Later, in 1404 AH, he received the honorary Alamiyat degree from Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama in India, and was awarded the Nadvi title[8].

Career

After completing education in 1959, Sultan Zauq started teaching profession at Madrasa Rashidia in Chandanaish Upazila. In 1960, Allama Zauq Nadvi joined Jamia Imdadia Kishoreganj. In 1962, in response to the call of Maulana Haji Yunus Saheb, Sultan Zauq Nadwi was appointed as a teacher in Al-Jamiah Al-Islamiah Patiya. In 1965, he left Jamia Patiya for the first time in order to establish a time-bound educational institution, and with his friendly scholar Kamal Uddin established an ideal madrassa named Kashemul Uloom in Agrabad. In the same year, he devoted himself as a teacher at Al-Jamiatul Islamiah Azizul Uloom Babunagar in response to the call of Allama Harun Babunagari. Zauq Nadvi taught there Arabic literature and Hadith at higher levels and also served as a Mufti. In addition to these, he established an organization named Nadiatul Adab for the students to study Arabic Literature. After the political upheaval of 1971, he was appointed to Al-Jamiah Al-Islamiah Patiya for the second time. Apart from teaching Tahawi Sharif, Tirmidhi Sharif, Mishkat and other important books there; he sponsored Arabic Language Department, establishing Arabic Language Academy. At that time, a quarterly Arabic journal named As-Subhul Jadeed, used to be published regularly in his editing, which was able to draw attention to the elitist in a short time.

In 1981, he went to India to participate in the International Literary Seminar and stayed for two months in the world-renowned Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama. In 1986, Allama Muhammad Sultan Jauq was appointed as a member of the trustee board of Rabeta Al-Adab al-Aslami (Universal League of Islamic Literature), and was declared chairman of Bangladesh regional office of the organization[9]. In his invitation in 1984, the world-renowned scholar Abul Hasan Ali Hasani Nadwi traveled to Bangladesh and advised him about establishing a madrassa according to the need of the age. In 1985, Allama Zauq Nadwi left Al-Jamiah Al-Islamiah Patiya for the second time and finally established Jamia Darul Ma'arif Al-Islamia.

In his initiative, an international literary seminar titled Islamic Influences in the Languages and Literature of the Eastern Nations was held in 1994 chaired by Abul Hasan Ali Hasani Nadwi in Jamia Darul Ma'arif Al-Islamia in the management of Rabita al-Adab al-Islami. In this seminar, the best poets of the Muslim world were present. Allama Muhammad Sultan zauq presented an important essay on Impact of Islam in Bangla Literature[10].

Allama Sultan Zauq Nadwi is serving as the Director General of his own madrsah Jamia Darul Ma'arif Al-Islamia.[citation needed]
