Elin Krantz a 27-year-old Swedish woman from Falköping was murdered in the Länsmansgården district of Gothenburg in Sweden in the autumn of 2010.[1] The body of Elin Krantz was interred at the Sankt Olof kyrkogård cemetery in her home town of Falköping.[2] In October the same year, a manifestation gathering over 1000 people was held in the district where her body was found, to commemorate her and protest violence.[3]

After having spent an evening in the night life of Gothenburg on 26 September 2010, she fell asleep on the tram and security cameras showed that she was followed by an Ethiopian man who attempted to rape her and beat her to death.[4][5] Her body was found with grave injuries 27 September 2010 in the Länsmansgården district.[4] On 28 September, a man with clothes and appearance similar to that on the man captured on the security camera is arrested by plainclothes policemen at Gothenburg central station.[6] Krantz' DNA was found on Yohannes' clothing and Yohannes' DNA was found on her body.[7]

Her attacker Ephrem Yohannes, an Ethiopian citizen then 23 years of age with a residence permit, was convicted for murder and attempted rape was proven.[6] In March 2011, Yohannes was sentenced to 18 years in prison and subsequent deportation.[4][5] In practice he was to serve 16 years as a two-year reduction is applied to deportation sentences.[6] The first sentence was appealed to the Hovrätt as the accused pleaded innocence whereas the prosecutor Stina Lundberg argued for a life sentence and that he also be sentenced for aggravated sexual assault.[8] In the autumn of 2011, court of appeals upheld the sentence from the district court.[6] During the hovrätt court proceeding it emerged that the wife and children of Yohannes had moved to a country outside Europe as they feared revenge.[6] The parents of Elin Krantz and her five siblings were awarded criminal damages of around 60 000 euro.[6]

Yohannes was initially incarcerated in the Norrtäljeanstalten prison in Norrtälje, a high security prison.[9] After attacking a fellow inmate, he was transferred to the security prison Salbergaanstalten in Sala.[9][10] Yohannes has received several warnings for inappropriate behaviour.[10]
