Baron Kilkeel is a title in the peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 19 May 2018 by Queen Elizabeth II for her grandson Prince Henry, Duke of Sussex, for the occasion of his marriage to Meghan Markle.[1] It is named for the town of Kilkeel, County Down, Northern Ireland.[1] On the same day, he was also created Duke of Sussex and Earl of Dumbarton.[2] Traditionally, male members of the Royal family are granted at least one title on their wedding day by the Monarch.[3] The full title and designation of the barony is "Baron Kilkeel, of Kilkeel in the County of Down".[4]

History and reaction

Prior to 2018, there had never been a noble title connected to Kilkeel. It was previously the capital of the Kingdom of Mourne in the Dark Ages.[5] It is located near the Mourne Mountains and is used as the base for the largest fishing fleet in Northern Ireland.[4][5] The barony was newly created to be Prince Harry's Northern Irish title to ensure that he hold a title in each of the three kingdoms that make up the United Kingdom.[6]

Upon the news of the title being created being published, the Democratic Unionist Party Member of Parliament for Lagan Valley; Sir Jeffrey Donaldson stated that he was: "thrilled that Prince Harry is to become Baron Kilkeel on his wedding day. The folk in my native Mourne will be over the moon. A truly historic day for Kilkeel."[6]
