He was getting touched. He was like, "This song is so beautiful." You don’t really get to see that side of us often. You really see us going onstage being fierce and confident and dancing upbeat, but this record, you really get a closer look at who we are.[1]

Composition and lyrics

"Don't Say You Love Me" is a torch song with a tropical-pop influence.[4][2] That runs for three minutes and thirteen seconds.[8]It is also been named as a power ballad.[9] It has other musical influences of soul, merengue and tropical house.[10] It features an acoustic guitar riff and some tropical rhythms, Along with an emotional and melodic backbone.[11][12][13] The song's rhythm is influenced by the sounds of "island" tropical music. The song has a quick tempo of 148 beats per minute and is composed in the key of F#.[14]

Lyrically, The song is about a rocky relationship and how you can tell that there is something wrong.[3] When talking about the song during a track-by-track review Dinah Jane explained saying that she was "sick during the recording". She went on saying: "Well, I was actually sick that day. Thanks to me being cold because I wouldn’t have done that pre-chorus. I was like, "I sound like a toad right now. Like, I don’t even know how or why you guys want me to sing this part because I feel like I’m dying," and then somehow I was able to come through. But we were sick. A lot of us were coming down with something around that time,"[1]

Isaac Wert from Echo said that "Don't Say You Love Me is by far the most best track on the album" entered around a "chilled-out guitar beat."[15] Dannii Ceniceros from Buzzfeed called the song a "steady-tempo empowerment reached song."[16]

The group also performed the song on MTV's reboot of Total Request Live alongside He Like That and was also performed in February 2018 on Hollywood Boulevard to a small crowd of fans.[17] While live on MTV Normani, explained her view on the group saying

We just really try to encourage everybody that there is beauty in everybody, and we’re all here with purpose, We have our bad days. We have our insecurities. But we really do a good job of lifting each other up.”[17][18]

They have a difference to all the other songs the perform except for "Don't Say You Love Me". Instead of having choreography they all sit down as if the set up is calm.[19]

Each member has there own verse and chorus that have a spotlight focused on them,[24][26] Each member is lined against the wall at some point, Beside a big window that shines a rainbow lit kaleidoscope to the camera that breaks out into pure white.[20] 3/4 of the way into the video has all the Fifth Harmony members are all in the same location at the same time, Each showing there own "soft choreography" and "emotions.[27] In one particular camera shot it shows the girls holding hands in a diamond-shaped formation which is a sign for their "love" and "friendship" for each other. In the conclusion of the video each member one-by-one exits the room, (while Brooke is singing) First starting with Kordei, Then next is Dinah Jane, Jauregui, Then leaves Brooke who is the last person to leave the room, As the door shuts the wind blows it open again which, Critics claim to be a sign of a possibility of the group coming back again.[23][25][28]
