Idolator's Mike Nied applauded the record's "slinky" production calling it a "dramatic anthem". "Expectations" is the debut solo single by American singer Lauren Jauregui, set to be released on October 24, 2018. "Expectations" will be released as the lead single to her debut album and is also her first since Fifth Harmony's hiatus.[3] Jauregui first performed the track back in June 2018, as an opening act for Halsey's Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Tour in Latin America.[4]
Background
Jauregui wrote "Expectations" and first recorded it around May 2018, being one of the first songs from the album. She premiered the track in June 2018, as an opening act for Halsey's Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Tour in Latin America, along with two other songs from the record.[5] Jauregui later said that she was "putting the final touches" to the song. She gave fans a brief preview of her upcoming single on October 1, 2018 with an 18-second snippet of the video for the song. Jauregui posted a photo of herself looking forlorn in a black dress with a background of the same color while standing on a bridge in a park; the bottom side shows her in a white dress with a small part in white.
Composition
A song composed in a compound time signature, "Expectations" is a soulful, slow-burning song with a spare, R&B beat.[6] Lyrically, "Expectations" finds Jauregui describing a relationship in which her partner does not appear to care about her as much as she does about them.[7] It also expresses the struggle of wanting to change the situation, but being unable to do so, in the song, the singer wishes she didn't have any expectations about love, but when she's laying in bed, alone, she wonders where her lover has been, well, she just can't help herself.[6] In an interview with Billboard, Jauregui said that the record is an "exploration of when you’re in a relationship with someone and you don’t want to have expectations. But they kind of get in the way, regardless, so it’s about that."[6] The song being slow and sultry, as Gim Kaufman of Billboard perceived, Jauregui's vocals are heard rising into an "urgent moan" on the "pleading" chorus.[6] It is building up to an electrifying blues guitar solo after the second chorus.[7]
Critical reception
Idolator's Mike Nied applauded the record's "slinky" production calling it a "dramatic anthem". The writer later felt that "Expectations" sounds "drastically different" from any of Lauren's prior work on Fifth Harmony. However, to Nied, the song is a "is a bold moment that is bound to put her on the right path" as she sounds "utterly at ease and highlights her compelling vocals" on the song, delivering "heaps" of personality.[7]
Music video
In the preview, the background to the video features a moody black-and-white clip of Jauregui slowly walking down a dimly lit hall as a muffled snippet of the ballad plays in the background. The video is set to be released on October 24, 2018.[8]
