Zheng Yunlong (郑云龙, born 27 June 1990) is a Chinese musical theatre actor and singer. He was born in Qingdao, Shandong and graduated from Beijing Dance Academy. His notable stage roles include the Chinese adaptations of Jekyll/Hyde in Jekyll & Hyde (musical), Quixote/Cervantes in Man of La Mancha, Stacee in Rock of Ages (musical), and Michael in Murder Ballad.

In August 2018, he won the Chinese Musical Academy Award for Best Actor in a Musical[1]. In November the same year, he participated in the singing competition reality show Super-Vocal and became one of the six final winners[2]. He also appeared in the singing contest show Singer 2019 as a member of the Super-Vocal finalist band. In March 2019, Zheng was recruited by Disney to sing the Mandarin version of the theme song "Baby Mine" for the fantasy adventure film Dumbo[3].

Career

Zheng's enthusiasm with stage performance comes from his mother, who is a Beijing Opera actress. During childhood he was often brought to the back stage and started to get familiar with theatre. He saw musical for the first time when he was a middle school student, when his mother took him on a trip to Beijing for the first performance of Cats (musical) in China. The show had a great influence on him. Since then Zheng has been interested in musicals and finally made it a career after graduation from the musical department of Beijing Dance Academy in 2013[4].

He made his stage debut in May 2013 playing the leading role Kessar in an original Chinese production Nasreddin. Until 2017 he worked for Beijing Songlei Theatre Ensemble, where he continued to lead in several original Chinese musicals, including Ah! Kuliangand Teresa Teng the Musical[5].

In 2017 Zheng left the ensemble to Shanghai and was cast as the title role in the Chinese version of the classic Broadway musical Jekyll & Hyde (musical), co-starring with Li-tong Hsu as Lucy, and Zhang Huifang as Emma. On 28 July, this show made its debut at the Shanghai Grand Theatre, where it was staged through 31 Aug, and then transferred to the Tianqiao Performing Arts Center in Beijing from Sept 8 to 29[6]. Since then he has played in various Chinese adaptations of foreign productions. Later the same year, he joined the cast of Murder Ballad, playing Michael, the poetry academic confronting trouble in his marriage to Sara.

In January 2018 he co-starred with Liu Lingfei, who was also a producer of the show, in a Chinese version of the hit broadway musical Rock of Ages, playing the rock star Stacee, which was described in his later interview as the favourite role he ever played[7][8]. The show has announced a return in Shanghai in October 2019.

He played the leading role Li Haomin in the 2018 production of Love! Human (translated), a comedy musical adapted by Mahua FunAge from its original comedy play, which was his first touch on a comedy character[9]. He performed in the show's Beijing debut in July, and its tour to Dalian in November the same year.

Later in 2018, Zheng was cast as Quixote/Cervantes in the Mandarin adaptation of the broadway musical Man of La Mancha, co-starring with Dang Yunwei and Miao Mengchu in September[10]. Being the youngest Chinese actor who has played Quixote/Cervantes, he expressed the challenges to the media. He also performed the title song "Man of La Mancha (I, Don Quixote)" in the second episode of Super-Vocal[11], and "The Impossible Dream" in the Super-Vocal concert tour.

In October 2018 Zheng starred in the original Chinese cast of Letter (musical), playing Wudao Gangzhi (Takeshima Takeshi), the loving older brother who goes into jail due to negligent homicide. The musical was adapted from the Japanese novel Tegami by Higashino Keigo. It premiered in Shanghai on 4 October 2018 and returned on 11 April 2019[12]. The national tour around China is currently in process.

Zheng made his first television appearance in the singing competition reality show Super-Vocal, which was broadcast by Hunan TV for three months starting November 2018. He performed a total of 14 musical songs and gained broad discussion and popularity from the show. Tickets were sold out within one minute of their release when he returned to theatre for Murder Ballad and Letter (musical) after Super-Vocal[13].

He also participated in the singing contest show Singer 2019 as one of the four-member band of Super-Vocal finalists, together with Ju Hongchuan, Ayunga, and Cai Chengyu. He performed five songs in the show, including "Never Enough" from the musical drama film The Greatest Showman[14], and "Heart" from the original Chinese musical Butterflies[15]. However, the show changed its live broadcasting date of the final episode to 12 April, creating a time conflict with Zheng's musical performance in Shanghai. He left Singer 2019 as a result to perform in Letter (musical) on that day[16].

He was cast to play the leading role Chen Zhongxing in The Poetic Age, which is his first time to perform in a play rather than musicals[17]. The producer of the play saw his performance in Man of La Mancha and decided to give him the role in agreement with the director. The play was staged at Shanghai Hongqiao Performing Arts Centre in May 2019 and will return in August.
