Tione Dalyan Merritt (born April 30, 2001), better known as Lil Tjay, is an American rapper, singer and songwriter from the Bronx, New York. He is best known for his collaboration with Polo G, "Pop Out", peaking at 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as "Resume" and "Brothers", with the latter receiving 44.4 million plays on SoundCloud, which led to his signing with Columbia Records. It has also been a staple on SoundCloud's Top 50 chart.

Early life

Lil Tjay was born Tione Dalyan Merritt and raised in the South Bronx area of New York City with his mother and siblings. In middle school, Lil Tjay began to get into fights and get involved in robberies leading him to serve multiple two and three-month sentences. In 2016, at the age of 15, he was sentenced to one year in a youth detention center. This longer time period influenced Lil Tjay to begin writing lyrics. In late 2017, Lil Tjay made a promise to his family that he would no longer be involved in crime. Before recording in a studio, he made several songs on his phone and computer, using bars designed to work in hip hop style. He was inspired by Usher and Michael Jackson, which his mother would play as he was growing up.

In 2017, Lil Tjay began releasing music on SoundCloud, including the singles "Resume" and "Brothers.[1] "Resume" was released while Tjay was still 16 years old, and was paired with a homemade video of Tjay hanging out in a small apartment, which soon began to spread online. On March 10, 2018, Tjay competed and placed first at the Coast 2 Coast LIVE NYC All Ages Edition, where his performance gained the attention of a record label A&R who was in attendance to judge the showcase.[2] He signed with Columbia Records after they noticed his song "Brothers", which had amassed millions of streams on SoundCloud.[3] On it, Tjay raps about death, dejection, and incarceration.

In July 2018, Lil Tjay worked with producer Cash Money AP to release "None of Your Love", which amassed 18.2 million plays in eight months.[4] Cash Money AP has produced tracks for rappers such as Lil Skies, Ty Dolla Sign, and YoungBoy Never Broke Again.[7] In January 2019, Lil Tjay was featured on a single with Polo G titled "Pop Out", which has 140 million views on YouTube.[8] When the artist released "Leaked" in September 2018, the song gained over 600,000 plays in less than a week on SoundCloud.[9]

Lil Tjay released his debut EP No Comparison at the end of 2018.[5] The EP contains one feature who is YNW Melly, the 19-year-old rapper from Gifford, Florida who began gaining buzz around the same time as Lil Tjay.[6] Their song "Ready for War" was the most successful from the EP and has over four million plays on SoundCloud.[6]

Artistry

Influenced by his upbringing in the South Bronx, Lil Tjay sings in English and incorporates Spanish although he does not speak the latter fluently. His verses are half-sung and with "hooks smoothed by Auto-Tune".[10] He has drawn comparisons to fellow New York-based rapper A Boogie wit da Hoodie.[11] In an interview with Rolling Stone, he credits his musical influences as Drake and Meek Mill.[10] In the same interview, Lil Tjay describes his music as adding a melodic sound when singing or rapping about his past struggles. Lil Tjay also credits his success to his year spent in prison, where he claims that his ability to write songs peaked.[5]

He has also worked with notable artists such as Tory Lanez and YNW Melly.[6] In July 2018, Lil Tjay joined Jay Critch, a rapper from Brooklyn, New York signed to the Rich Forever Music label, in the studio and a snippet of their song, "Ruthless", was played on a joint Instagram live stream.[12][13]

In Pitchfork's featured article on Lil Tjay, they refer to him as a "hip-hop heartthrob" and mention how Usher is one of his inspirations.[1] Later in the interview, Lil Tjay explained that he is often called the "Bronx Justin Bieber" because of his sampling Justin Bieber's "Baby".[1]

Live performances

Lil Tjay is accompanying Seattle rapper Lil Mosey on his nationwide tour throughout 2019.[14][15] He will also be performing at the three-day Rolling Loud music festival, along with Migos, Travis Scott, and Kid Cudi in Miami Gardens, Florida in May 2019.[16]
