Kaitlin Bennett is an American gun rights advocate, pro-life advocate, and social media personality. Bennett received media attention in 2018 for open-carrying an AR-10 rifle legally at Kent State University after graduating.

Early life

Bennett is from Zanesville, Ohio.[1]

Education

In May 2018, at age 22, Bennett graduated with a degree in biology from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.[1][2][3] At the university, Bennett founded Liberty Hangout, a media outlet.[3]

Politics

In 2017, she was active with Turning Point USA at Kent State before the local chapter controversially folded.[4]

When interviewing Pete Buttigieg husband, he refused to say if love had no age and said he would have to think about it during a segment on adult-child relationships.[5] In 2018, Bennett open-carried an AR-10 rifle at Kent State University, as a protest in favor of the right of students to be able to carry guns on campus, which they are not allowed to do now, as Kent State forbids students, faculty, and staff from carrying firearms on campus, but not visitors. As a graduate, Bennett was no longer subject to this rule.[3][6] Bennett stated that as a student, she should have been able to open-carry for self-defense, citing the 1970 Kent State shootings where Ohio National Guardsmen fired on unarmed students protesting the U.S. bombing of Cambodia.[2] Later that year, Bennett organized an open-carry rally at Kent State. The university released a statement that a cease and desist had been issued against advertising the event, as Bennett had not attempted to register the event with the university.[7] She returned to Kent State in November to host a discussion on gun rights.[8]

In December 2018, Salon.com reported that Bennett had released a video of herself shooting at a "Happy Holidays" sign as a protest against Americans saying "happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas".[9]

Following her initial protest of Kent State, Bennett became a correspondent for Infowars[10][11]. Due to her affiliation with Infowars, she was removed from a campaign event for Bernie Sanders.[12] Bennett also interviewed Buttigieg's husband Chasten regarding if "love has no age?" to which he responded he would have to "think about it" and would not answer the question.[13]

Bennett has received criticism for her tweets, including one that shared a video of her drinking milk in response to a tweet from PETA claiming that milk was associated with white supremacy,[14] and another that stated that she "loved not living in Mexico".[15] Bennett appeared alongside U.S. representative Aaron Bernstine and mayor Jondavid Longo for the college Republicans.[16]

In 2019, she claimed she was removed from a memorial to Rutgers alumnus Paul Robeson at Rutgers University. She was trying to interview people and claimed that liberals called four officers on her because of her opposing ideology.[17] Rutgers employees said no-one was removed from campus.[18]
