Revision as of 18:31, 16 September 2020

Hello, I saw your comment and decided to double check the criteria on WP:Musicbio. Wouldn't placing second at Seattle's Sound Off competition meet the criteria? Sound Off is a NW music competition that can get musicians into Bumbershoot, it is the premiere NW competition for 21 and under musicians, she has placed second in the finals round. I feel this is also my fault since I didn't clarify in the article enough about Sound Off. Said person, meets criteria 1, 9 and 10. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chanri3571 (talkcontribs) 06:07, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chanri3571: Thanks for your message. I'm glad you were able to take a close look at the criteria and see how they apply. I know it's subjective, but it's still not clear to me that these criteria are met; however, you can resubmit and another reviewer can take a look. :) - MapleSoy (talk) 18:30, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MapleSoy - thanks for your comments on my first attempt at a wikipedia article. I've added lots of references to book reviews and whatever else I could find. I'd welcome your feedback. Thankyou. Oscarjemimakia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oscarjemimakia (talkcontribs) 15:27, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Oscarjemimakia: Thanks for adding those references! To improve your article, I would suggest that instead of just including links to a bunch of reviews, you write something about what those reviews say about the subject's works. Otherwise, it isn't very informative. It looks like there's been enough coverage of her works so I would be happy to move the article into main space once you've made some changes. - MapleSoy (talk) 18:30, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks MapleSoy I've started adding a bit more detail about her work using the book reviews but this is going to take a while... :) Oscarjemimakia (talk) 20:11, 2 August 2020 (UTC) Oscarjemimakia[reply]

Hi |MapleSoy| I'd love your feedback on my latest edits. Many thanksOscarjemimakia (talk) 16:10, 3 August 2020 (UTC)Oscarjemimakia[reply]
Hi Oscarjemimakia: Nice work! I've restructured the article so that it is easier to follow and add to. Here are my suggestions:
  • Do you have any references for her education (high school and uni)?
  • I think you nicely capture the content of Thompson's work; it would be helpful to know how this work has been received (this is helpful for establishing notability). For example, you could include some quotes from reviews (for example, pulling a quote from your citation #10).
  • Under Selected works, we don't need more than one reference for each book to show that it exists. (These refs can be incorporated into the body of the article if they add anything.)
  • I would suggest selecting the most important/most frequently cited articles for the Selected works section... I usually see about 4-8 listed.

Tanks for all your help and support |MapleSoy| I am really learning a lot about wikipedia and how to write articles. I'd added more references and quotations as you suggest, and reduced the publications.Oscarjemimakia (talk) 12:04, 4 August 2020 (UTC)Oscarjemimakia[reply]

Meredith Kopit Levien

Hello! On behalf of The New York Times Company (and as disclosed on the article's talk page), I've suggested some updates (actually, corrections) to the Meredith Kopit Levien article at Talk:Meredith Kopit Levien. One editor implemented the first request, but I've struggled to get someone to review Talk:Meredith_Kopit_Levien#Additional_requests to fix inaccurate text. I've drafted specific changes here, which I hope makes reviewing and implementing easy. Would you be willing to review and update the article on my behalf? Inkian Jason (talk) 14:20, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Inkian Jason: That's not something I'm interested in doing, but you can add your request to WP:COIREQ; there isn't a huge backlog so that would probably be your best bet. - MapleSoy (talk) 17:32, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Inkian Jason (talk) 17:52, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MapleSoy. Thanks for your observations and advices about my article. I have followed your instructions. I have added enough inline citations to support the statements and deleted the "External Links" section. I hope you find the document good enough now. Regards PurpleDandelion (talk) 22:54, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PurpleDandelion1: Thanks for adding inline citations; I will leave these for another editor to review. If you can add a reference for the Education section, please do; otherwise, it should be removed.
Also, I see you removed the External Links section at the bottom; I actually meant to remove the external links from the body of the article (i.e., in the first two paragraphs). You can have an External Links section at the bottom, to be clear. - MapleSoy (talk) 19:42, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MapleSoy,

Thanks very much for rapid review and thoughtful feedback about Draft:Tina Seelig.

Based on your comments, I have replaced and/or supplemented the existing in-line citations (including for the three awards mentioned, as well as all three of Dr. Seelig's books that are referenced). I also included quotes from reviews of these books by Entrepreneur magazine and Publisher's Weekly.

I hope these revisions address the issues you raised. Please let me know of any questions or additional thoughts you may have.

Thank you so much.

Hi Robin D Gordon Jr: Thanks for your message. The main thing is that in order to meet Wikipedia's standards for inclusion, there needs to be significant coverage of the subject in independent and reliable sources, like newspaper or magazine articles. The "significant" part means that there needs to be more than passing mentions (being quoted in an article would count as a passing mention). I've reviewed all the references currently included in the article and I don't think they quite yet meet that standard. If you are able to find references that do, they should be included.
Unfortunately, some subjects don't meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion despite doing very good works, and that isn't because the writer has done anything wrong; it just means that there isn't enough material outside of Wikipedia to support an article. Let me know if you have any questions about this. - MapleSoy (talk) 18:27, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

MapleSoy Thank you your edits and message. I am new, brand new to this and a tad confused. To return to the draft to revise the inline citations, do I begin working on the draft in the "Read" tab or access it from the "Edit Source" tab? Also, your message stated "the article needs a bit of cleanup to get the in-line citations to work." I included cites at the end. Is it a formatting issue or something else with the citations? I do not see any red marks or anything highlighting an edit or need to revise. Please advise. Thank you. OMArchibald Omarchibald (talk) 21:07, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Omarchibald: Thanks for reaching out! You can edit the draft by clicking the "Edit" tab at the top of Draft: Ann Graves Tanksley.
Yes, it's mostly just a formatting issue. Right now if you take a look at the article, you have all the references listed at the end, which is a good start. But you can see where I added a properly formatted in-line citation in the "Early life" section -- if you hover over or click on the linked [1], it takes you to the reference. Do you see where you have the numbers 6 to 8 floating in the next paragraph? Those need to be converted to the same kind of in-line citation.
I find the easiest way is to do this in the visual editor; when you go to edit the draft, you can click on the pencil on the top-right and make sure that it says "Visual editing". Then where you want to insert an in-line citation, you can click on "Cite" at the top and fill out the little box that comes up. It'll also automatically add it to the list of your references on the bottom. Try experimenting with this and let me know if you have any questions. Don't worry about mucking it up because we can always undo and help fix any mistakes. :)
And then for a non-formatting issue, there are some spots that are missing references, like the list of exhibitions, which I'd suggest significantly trimming down. Let me know if you need any help. - MapleSoy (talk) 21:38, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

RE Draft Ann Tanksley

I accessed the document today and made the inline citations edits. After I selected publish changes I received the cite error message below. I read he help page and returned to the document to rectify. But, It appears the General Reference citations are still not being accepted. Please advise. Thanks.

Cite error: There are <ref group=General references> tags on this page, but the references will not show without a

template (see the help page).

Hi Omarchibald: Nice work with the citations! It looks like another editor fixed that error up. The article just needs a bit of cleanup now; I'll reach out to the folks at WP:Women in Red to help us out; otherwise, I'll get to it in the next few days. - MapleSoy (talk) 01:51, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MapleSoy,

I'm Zmdrecidoro, the writer who drafted an article about the Kim Loo Sisters. I understand your comments and reason for rejection; there aren't much by way of research about the Sisters and their colorful career in Hollywood. All the information I have is first-hand from one of the Sisters's daughters, Leslie Li, who is also making a documentary about them.

I looked through the Citing Sources and Referencing for Beginners pages and it doesn't seem to make provisions for first-hand sources? How can I go about this? I am helping Leslie Li get more word about the Sisters and thought it might be a good idea to have a Wiki page---but it seems like even if we have first-hand information from a family member, we cannot get to make it an actual article in Wikipedia.

Hope you can help!

Zmdrecidoro (talk) 17:41, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Zmdrecidoro: Thanks for reaching out. You're exactly right in that Leslie's first-hand knowledge shouldn't be included in the article without a reference, because it isn't verifiable. However, I saw that she has published a book, and you can use the book as a reference.
The sisters are definitely notable -- a quick newspaper archive search found over 700 references for them! -- so I would encourage you to improve the article because it does belong in Wikipedia. As I mentioned in my previous comment, I've left some clippings on the article's talk page at Draft talk:Kim_Loo_Sisters. I'd suggest that you trim the article down to what can be found in independent, reliable sources (you can always expand it later). It's easier to start with a short, well-cited article, and then take your time adding in details as you find references for them. Let me know if you need any help!
- MapleSoy (talk) 01:42, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

MapelSoy Hope you are well today. Thanks for all of your help. I received a message that the item is now live. I would appreciate any recommendations you can make to improve it so I can try to do so. I noticed there is a message on the entry noting a need for additional work, specifically the addition of categories. But, no explanation of what other categories or info type would improve the article. The final editor's notes also mention that the article needs some work. But, no specifics. First time out. So, any recommendations to improve would be appreciated and I will try to oblige. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Omarchibald (talkcontribs) 01:22, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Omarchibald: The nice thing about the Wikipedia community is that it isn't solely on you to improve the articles you start -- as you can see from the page history (click "View history" at the top of the article), other editors have made improvements and Oronsay has now added those missing categories (thank you!). So that bit's taken care of. :)
In terms of other ways to improve the article, some ideas are: making sure the references are reliable (other Wikipedia pages can't be used as references, for instance), replacing them with independent sources (like newspapers or magazine articles) where possible; editing the second paragraph of the "Artistic style" section (is it missing some quotation marks?); and adding links to Wikipedia pages for the museums and collections. Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi MapleSoy,

Thank you very much for these suggestions! We would also like to thank you for the additional references you left on the page. We'll use the books, "Just Us Girls" and "The Kim Loo Sisters", and look through newspaper archives for references.

Request on 14:46:02, 4 September 2020 for assistance on AfC submission by Holly Picano

HI. I see you denied the Shawn V. Portmann page because the references were not significant enough. I would like to share with you why Shawn V. Portmann is trying to secure a Wiki page and maybe you have some ideas or suggestions to help. Shawn Portmann has the same name as a well-known criminal in the mortgage industry. There is significant media coverage around this criminal with the same name; coverage from the news to the FBI. The only way to differentiate the two Shawn's is through a middle initial. The idea of creating a Wiki page for Shawn V. Portmann is to let the public know THIS Shawn is not a criminal in the mortgage industry. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you. Holly Holly Picano (talk) 14:46, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Holly Picano, I can see from your explanation why Shawn is motivated to increase his web presence! Unfortunately, that is not a sufficient reason to skirt Wikipedia's policies and main goal (to create an encyclopedia). To qualify for an article, he would need to have significant coverage in independent, reliable sources. If you are able to improve the article to meet that criterion, great! If this isn't possible, I would suggest other ways to improve his SEO, outside of Wikipedia (e.g., LinkedIn). There are also other wikis (outside of Wikipedia) that allow users to add any content about any topic; those might be a better bet. Good luck! - MapleSoy (talk) 02:37, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your review of the draft article on Kate Lord Brown. Could I get clarification on "In-line citations are needed for every claim"? (I am technically adept but a very inexperienced worker bee here at Wikipedia.)

For instance, the opening sentence of the draft reads: "Lord Brown grew up in Devon, UK, and studied at St Margaret's, Exeter, before gaining a fine art scholarship to Blundell's." Arguably, there are three claims made in that sentence: that she grew up in Devon; that she studied at St. Margaret's; and that she got the indicated scholarship at Blundell's. Using the same strict interpretation (mine, I mean), that sentence and the rest of the article will be littered with in-line cites. This doesn't to me seem consistent with many Wikipedia biographies' styles. (I understand various editors' standards might differ from one another's.)

Again, not challenging, just wanting to confirm. For example, what sort of external linkable source could possibly provide evidence that she studied at St. Margaret's?

GREATLY appreciate your patience. Thanks for any further help, even if means just pointing me to a source to help me resolve these ambiguities!

FLJerseyBoy (talk) 16:30, 9 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi FLJerseyBoy, thanks for your message. You've asked a good question. The relevant policy is WP:BLP, which describes the high standard that Wikipedia has for biographies of living people. In the example you provided, yes, I actually would provide a source for all three of the claims made in that sentence. The policy linked above says that there should be no original research WP:ORIGINAL, which means that the information does need to be found in reliable, published sources. To answer your second question, the source does not need to be "linkable"; an offline newspaper or book can also be used. And if cannot be found in any published source, it should not be included in the biography (even if you personally know the fact to be true).
To get this draft accepted, I would focus on the author's career achievements. If you can add a citation for the claim that her books have made bestsellers' lists, and add books reviews that can be found in published sources, then she would meet the notability criteria for authors and the draft will be accepted.
Happy to clarify any of this! Thanks for your patience with the AfC process. - MapleSoy (talk) 04:01, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MapleSoy,

Maybe it's obvious but it's my first article with the English Wikipedia and I am kind of confused as what is meant by "does not meet the minimum standard for inline citations". I checked out the link and now I have two competing theories. Do you mean there are too many needless citations (i.e . the sources are not contentious ) or that there not enough of them? I would appreciate your feedback very much. Thank you. --Vasif.khalafov (talk) 07:44, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vasif.khalafov, thanks for reaching out and welcome to English Wikipedia! More references are needed for this draft. All the statements about her career need references in order to be verifiable; you can remove any statements that you cannot find a reference for. Please also include independent, reliable sources that show that the subject has received significant coverage; this is important in order to meet the notability criteria for biographies, found at WP:BIO. For example, it would be helpful to include published reviews of her books. Let me know if you have any further questions! - MapleSoy (talk) 19:02, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
