Appearance
The Tamaskan Dog Register (TDR) breed standard describes an ideal size of 25–29 inches (63.5–73.7cm) for males and 24-27.9 inches (61cm–71cm) for females. The breed is described as having an intelligent gaze, well-furred body, erect ears, bottle-brush shaped tail, and athletic build. Acceptable coat colors are red gray, wolf gray and black gray agouti patterns.

Temperament
Tamaskans are highly intelligent and quick to learn new things, and are usually very friendly with both adults and children. The TDR breed standard stipulates that they are not shy, timid, or aggressive, and thus they do not make good guard dogs despite their wolf-like appearance. Some Tamaskans have been successfully trained as service dogs. Tamaskans are loyal family/pack-oriented dogs, which means they can be prone to suffering from separation anxiety and/or exhibiting destructive behavior if left alone for extended periods of time.

"Tamaska" means "mighty wolf" in the Munsee dialect of Delawarian, an Algonquin language.[2]

History

The first generation of registered Tamaskan dogs was born in May 2006 in Scotland.[2]. The American Rare Breed Association adopted the Tamaskan Dog Breed Standard in August 2016Cite error: A (see the help page).

The Tamaskan breed is considered to be relatively healthy with few serious genetically inherited conditions. TDR-affiliated breeders perform extensive health testing and only healthy dogs are allowed to breed. Health issues that occur in a small percentage of the overall Tamaskan population include hip dysplasia, cryptorchidism, degenerative myelopathy, epilepsy, Addison’s Disease, juvenile cataracts, and digestive problems/food allergies.[5]

In 2016, a Broadway production of The Crucible starring Saoirse Ronan featured a Tamaskan playing the role of a wolf.[6]

Since 2010, a Tamaskan has been the live mascot for the NC State Wolfpack and often appears on the sidelines at the team's home football games, bowl games, and other football and men’s basketball events.[7][8]
