Prince Misuzulu Zulu (born 23 September 1974) is the oldest surviving son of Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu and the probable heir apparent to the throne of the Zulu nation, since the death of his father on 12 March 2021.[1][2]
Heir Apparent
His mother, Princess Mantfombi Dlamini of Eswatini, was King Goodwill Zwelithini's Great Wife, which meant that her children would take preference in succession over the children of the late king's other wives.[3]. Princess Mantfombi was appointed interim leader of the Zulu Kingdom after the king's death and she holds the responsibility to formally appoint the next Zulu king.[4][5]
No official confirmation has been given by the Zulu Royal Family of Prince Misuzulu's status as the heir to the throne, with some members of the family calling the debate over successors premature.[6] At the funeral service, the late king's sister, Princess Thembi Ndlovu stated that the Royal Family did not yet know who the next king would be and that the individual would be "chosen by God".[7] Historically, Prince Misuzulu's claim to the throne would have been automatic but the Zulu Kingdom now considers itself a constitutional monarchy, the leader of which must be appointed.[6]
Cultural experts and historians believe that Prince Misuzulu will ultimately be appointed to ascend to the throne.[7][3] On 24 March 2021, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi issued a statement on behalf of the Zulu Royal Family stating that the new king would only be announced after the three-month mourning period for the late king.[8]
Personal Life & Education
Little is known of the Prince's personal life, other than that he is unmarried and has one son.[9][7] Some sources claim he has a degree in international studies, while others state he is still pursuing the degree, in Jacksonville, Florida.[6][7]
