History

The ship got into difficulties on Friday, 3 December 1909 near Newhaven, East Sussex whilst carrying Ballast to Hull from Barry Docks, Wales. The crew dropped anchor off Birling Gap, but the waves pushed the ship east and she ran aground between Birling Gap and Beachy Head. The crew were able to get off the ship, and used a nearby cliff ladder to get to safety. It was not until the Tuesday, 14 December 1909 that assistance was provided to help refloat the vessel but, despite the efforts of five tugs and one salvage vessel, the attempt failed. Eventually on Sunday, 26 December 1909 the crew managed to refloat the ship, unaided, and continued on to Tilbury for any potential damage to be reviewed.

On Tuesday, 27 November 1917, the ship was enroute to Dieppe, carrying a cargo of coal from Newport. At 10:40am that morning she was struck by a single torpedo, fired without warning, from the German U-boat SM UB-57 with one life lost. The cargo of coal can be found scattered on the sea bed nearby.
