I see that you released some of your images into the public domain by adding {{PD}}. Could you please indicate the license status for your other images (such as Image:Jellyfishes.jpg and Image:Different-colour-dyed-wool.jpg) by adding either {{GFDL}} or {{PD}}. Sorry, I didn't see the "or 1871" part at the top of the article. Still, if as you say she gave her birthdate as 1871 I'm inclined to think that's what it is (people sometimes give out their wrong age by accident (18 or 19) but they usually give out their correct birth year.AndyL 17:48, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Mardi Gras

Hello. I don't have a good knowledge of the French language, but here in Louisiana I have always heard "Mardi Gras" translated as "Fat Tuesday", and indeed "Fat Tuesday" is a common alternative term. I'm curious about your changing the references to "Greasy Tuesday". Is that a better translation? Is that phrase in common use some where? Wondering, -- Infrogmation 22:40, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Mardi Gras is overwhelmingly translated, on the occasions that it is, as Fat Tuesday - referring to the fats (butter, meat etc) that one had to give up for Lent following Shrove Tuesday. Gras, like graisse, can mean grease or lubricant but in cooking usually translates as fat. For example, on food labelling, when matières grasses are indicated, it refers to fat content rather than an unpalatable and improbable grease content. Infrogmation is quite right too to point out that the traditional usage in Louisiana is to translate as Fat Tuesday. But is there anywhere that habitually translates as greasy? As you suggested a Google search, I followed your advice and got over 57000 hits for fat tuesday and a measly 51 for greasy tuesday, some of which were apparently for a song by a Finnish group and others for a BBC quiz in which it was the wrong answer. Usage and meaning, I'd say, come down heavily on the side of fat Tuesday. However, it's probably worth putting a fuller explanation of the precise connotations (including greasy) of fat in the Mardi Gras article, but removing greasy from Carnival and Shrove Tuesday as being less than helpful. I simply do not understand your point. Fat Tuesday is precisely the exact literal word-for-word translation of Mardi Gras. It is not a folk translation at all. If anything is a folk translation, it is your suggested greasy Tuesday. Man vyi 07:23, Nov 7, 2004 (UTC)

Saintswithin, while I appreciate your efforts, I'd like to point out that there are links to the First World War, Second World War, German reunification etc. contained in the Germany text already, so that your Main article links are superfluous, and unnecessarily expand the article further - MfG, Heimdal 15:00, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)
