The Hunter Biden laptop controversy centers around messages and images from one or more laptops alleged to belong to Hunter Biden, generating significant interest during and after the 2020 United States presidential election, linked to the Biden–Ukraine controversy. According to Business Insider a laptop reportedly abandoned at a Delaware computer shop was handed to allies of Donald Trump, and procured in 2019 by the New York Post which published material claimed to incriminate Hunter Biden and harmful for his father Joe Biden's presidential candidacy, which were subsequently blocked from Facebook.[1] According to a CNN report, Hunter Biden told CBS’s Tracy Smith that a laptop seized by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from a Delaware computer shop could have belonged to him, saying it could have been stolen by Russian intelligence.[2] In August 2021, the The Daily Mail was reported to have released a video of Hunter Biden telling an unidentified sex worker in January 2019 about a different laptop that was stolen from him by Russian drug dealers.[3][unreliable source?][4][unreliable source?]

Allegations of media cover up

In an editorial for the Wall Street Journal, Holman W. Jenkins Jr. criticized the US’s "newspapers of record" for conspiring to "deny facts and hide truth" on the subject, pointing to The Washington Post Factor Checker Glenn Kessler for confirming some of the New York Post’s reporting on the laptop, but downplaying its significance for updating a Oct 2020 explainer he published on the laptop.[5] Jenkins Jr also criticized a letter from a group of 50 former intelligence officials published in Politico which claimed the release of the laptop data had "hallmarks" of a "Russian information operation"[6] , saying the group was "lying to the American public to influence an election".[7]

US government investigations

According to a July 2020 report from Politico report, US federal officials held off certain actions in its investigations into Hunter Biden in order not to influence the 2020 elections.[8] Hunter Biden has himself confirmed that investigations are ongoing.[9]
