Mister Sister is a 2021 Canadian-American dramedy film by the filmmaker Mars Roberge[1]. It stars Jack James Busa, Her Royal Highness Princess Diandra and Debra Haden, along with the debut acting performance by Jim Sclavunos of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.[2] It was also the last performance by Ari Gold before his passing.[3]

Plot

A suicidal man from Milwaukee is given a second chance at life in NYC, working as a drag MC while learning the courage from the caring LGBTQ+ community to pursue his dreams, including a relationship with a tap dancing single mom.[4]

Production

Writing

Mister Sister was written by Mars Roberge over the winter of 2018 as a way to get over the grief of the recent passing of his friend, glam rock singing legend Brett Smiley. During a Q & A at Winter Film Awards, Mars stated that "he [Brett Smiley] was my inspiration for making the movie because I wanted that song ["Space Ace"] in the movie so bad that I started with that song as a cover and then I worked backwards to think 'what kind of script can I do to get to that song' and that's how I made the movie."[6] Mars describes Mister Sister as the result of drawing a line down the middle between his previous productions, The Little House That Could and Scumbag, where it as the crude humour of Scumbag mixed with the loving, caring LGBTQ+ community from The Little House That Could.[7]

Pre-production

The casting for Mister Sister was done by the director, Mars Roberge, starting in 2018. Several of the actors had cameo roles in his prior documentary The Little House That Could and some were from his film Scumbag. The remaining cast were found by placing advertisements in Backstage, Breakdown Express and Craigslist. The main actor, Jack James Busa, was a last second replacement, coming onto set with less than a week of prep time, including having to write and record a cover version of "Space Ace" by Brett Smiley.[8] Brandon Olson, who played Vera, was also a last second replacement.

Mister Sister was self-funded Roberge.

Filming

Principal photography for Mister Sister began on 3 January 2020, in New York City under Roberge's film production company, World Domination Pictures. The entire movie was filmed over 12 days straight with the final day being the day before New York City's pandemic lockdown.[9] Mister Sister was simultaneously filmed using a Red Weapon and Red Helium camera in 8K raw.[10]

Post-production

Mister Sister was edited by Roberge over the course of two months using Adobe Premiere CC. Color-correction was done at Nomad Editing Company in Santa Monica by Flame artist Josh Kirschenbaum. All mixing and post sound was done at Cerebral Studios in Toronto.

Release

Mister Sister had its world premiere as the official closing night film for the 24th Dances With Films on 12 September 2021, held at TCL Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood.[11] It then had a sold-out east coast premiere in NYC as the official closing night film for the 10th Winter Film Awards International Film Festival held at Cinema Village on 30 September 2021.[12] The final public screening to date was the Canadian premiere held in Toronto at Revue Cinema on 9 October 2021. Roberge along with several cast and crew members were present for all the public screenings, engaging with the audience after the film.

Shortly following the successful screenings, Arsenal Pictures acquired the world rights for Mister Sister and plans to release the film towards the end of 2021. [13]

Reception

Mister Sister has received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. Unseen Films calls it "a one of a kind film in the best sort of way."[14] Original Rock out writes: "Mister Sister will relentlessly tickle your senses with laughter, tears and a whole load of street rocking drag queen chit chat. Borrow, buy or steal it, but just f*cking see it."[15] FilmFestivals.com writes: "He [Jack James Busa] is an awesome talent and so charismatic you can't keep your eyes off him This film MUST make him a star."[16] My Indie Productions writes: "Mister Sister is simply a joy, a fun journey covering some serious issues, as well as introducing some of its audience to a world they may not otherwise be exposed to, which in my opinion is commendable."[17] As of October 24th, 2021, IMDb subscribers have rated Mister Sister a 9.3 out of 10.[18]

Accolades

In 2021, Mister Sister won Best NYC Film at Winter Film Awards International Film Festival and Jack James Busa was nominated for Best Actor.[19]

Themes

While Mister Sister has been called "a feel good dramedy"[20] it also deals with very serious themes: drug addiction, prostitution, suicide, alcoholism, transgender identification, sexism and political correctness.

Music

To help promote the release of Mister Sister, a music video was released, both directed and edited by Roberge, containing footage from the film as well as the artist singing the track within the film: "Sad Sad Vampire" performed by Skunk in the Roses (aka Debra Haden[21]). Plus, World Domination Pictures created World Domination Records, a vinyl record label out of Los Angeles with initial releases of Skunk in the Roses full-length debut album "Rabid Perfume" (containing the song "Sad Sad Vampire" from Mister Sister) and the split 12-inch single for Rise NYC's "Rock 'n' Roll Manifesto (Thee Majesty Hip Dub Mix by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge)" as featured in Mister Sister with the b-side Binary Starr System's "What's Da T? (David J's Dub Science Mix)[22]". [23] The score was written by Linda Lamb who also wrote the intro song to Roberge's prior feature, Scumbag. The soundtrack also contains several songs written by Mars Roberge from his various music projects.[13]
