The 2022 Eastern Australia floods is a current flood event occurring in South East Queensland and the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. The city of Brisbane suffered major flooding, along with the cities of Gympie, Ipswich, Logan City, the Gold Coast, and Lismore. Currently seven people have died during the flooding, with the Brisbane River to reach 4 metres high and Lismore, NSW experiencing the highest flood line in it's history.

Extent

Falls over 400 millimetres (16 in) have been recorded.[5] The Mary River at Gympie is expecting its highest peak since 1999.[6] According to Seqwater, Wivenhoe Dam is at 180% capacity as of 27 February 2022.[7] Enoggera Dam, in the western Brisbane suburb of The Gap, reached a record capacity of 270% on 27 February 2022.[8] On the morning of 27 February the Brisbane River’s height reached 3.1 metres (10 ft), higher than the 2.3-metre (7 ft 7 in) peak height of flooding in 2013.[9]

Impact

Almost one thousand schools were closed in response to the flooding,[10] evacuations took place[11] and the public were advised to avoid non-essential travel.[12] With over 3500 homes experiencing internal flooding. Holman Street ferry wharf in the Brisbane River was severely damaged by floating debris.[13]
