Welcome to Wikipedia!

Hello IP user. Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contributions!

I'm Walter Görlitz, one of the other editors here, and I hope you decide to stay and help contribute to this amazing repository of knowledge. Although you're free to perform most tasks on Wikipedia without registering, it's highly recommended you create an account as there are many added benefits. It's private and secure and it's also free, simple, and quick to do.

Some pages of helpful information to get you started:
  Introduction to Wikipedia
  The five pillars of Wikipedia
  Editing tutorial
  How to edit a page
  Simplified Manual of Style
  The basics of Wikicode
  How to develop an article
  How to create an article
  Help pages
  What Wikipedia is not
Some common sense Dos and Don'ts:
  Do be bold
  Do assume good faith
  Do be civil
  Do keep cool!
Do maintain a neutral point of view
  Don't spam
  Don't infringe copyright
Don't edit where you have a conflict of interest
  Don't commit vandalism
  Don't get blocked
If you need further help, you can:
  Ask a question
or you can:
  Get help at the Teahouse
or even:
Ask an experienced editor to "adopt" you

Alternatively, leave me a message at my talk page or type {{helpme}} here on your talk page and someone will try to help.

There are many ways you can contribute to Wikipedia. Here are a few ideas:
  Fight vandalism
Be a WikiFairy or a WikiGnome
  Help contribute to articles
  Perform maintenance tasks

Become a member of a project that interests you
  Help design new templates
Subscribe and contribute to The Signpost
Translate articles from Wikipedias in other languages

To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. If you register an account, you can create your own personal sandbox for use any time. It's perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you could put a link to it on your user page.

Please remember to:

  • Always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes ~~~~ at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your IP address linked to your contributions page (however, if you create an account, your IP address will be hidden and you will be able to build a custom signature that can link to your own user page), a link to this IP's talk page, and a timestamp.
  • Leave descriptive edit summaries for your edits. Doing so helps other editors understand what changes you have made and why you made them.
The best way to learn about something is to experience it. Explore, learn, contribute, and don't forget to have some fun!

Sincerely, Walter Görlitz (talk) 19:08, 23 February 2022 (UTC)   (Leave me a message)[reply]

I have a template Idea

Can someone help make this template idea for me? I’ve been thinking of making a “Defunct Article” template for articles that have been largely inactive. This way, editors won’t have to waste their time on articles that haven’t been edited for nearly 3-9 years. If someone can help me make one that’d be helpful. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.97.131.85 (talk) 20:06, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Editing an "abandoned" article is actually the opposite of a time waste; we want people to update information when appropriate. If a specific, low-quality abandoned article seems to have genuinely fallen through the cracks and shouldn't exist anymore, you can nominate it for procedural deletion, so we don't have to rely on people reacting well to being told what to do. I agree with I dream of horses. This isn't really a help request, more of an edit request, but I don't see the purpose in such a template, in particular, I wouldn't describe editing such pages as "wasting time"-- if anything, those pages should be drawn to. @I dream of horses @Naleksuh Apologies for not being on time with responding, nor being specific on what I meant. My proposal was only to let editors know that the article has been largely inactive, that’s all. My bad for putting “waste their time”, I should have been careful and used different words. 68.97.131.85 (talk) 22:08, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There's no reason to inform people that the article has been largely inactive on the article itself. We already have Wikiproject Abandoned Articles, which articles can be added to via a talk page template. I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 22:14, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I didn’t know that, apologies for the inconvenience I have brought. 68.97.131.85 (talk) 22:41, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
