Mounaragam (transl. Silent Symphony) is a Malayalam language Indian television soap opera that airs on the general entertainment channel Asianet and streams on Disney+ Hotstar. It is an official remake of the Telugu language serial Mouna Raagam, which airs in Star Maa.

Plot

Deepa and Prakashan are a couple who live with Prakashan's mother. Deepa is a kind-hearted woman who cares for everyone. Prakashan, on the contrary, is a cruel man who finds girls to be a burden. For that reason he ignores Kadhambari, who is his first daughter, and longs for a son. Prakashan's mother supports Prakashan in this. Deepa becomes pregnant for a second time, but this time Prakashan decides to kill the baby since he can't afford another child. He, with the help of his mother, poisons Deepa. Luckily, the child survives, but she is born mute due to the poison. Prakashan and his mother are terrified since the child is a girl and speech-deprived. Prakashan consults an astrologer who predicts that the child will bring misfortune to the family. Everybody is terrified; as a result, they mistreat the child—except Deepa and her brother (Dayanand), who feel they should care for her. They name the girl Kalyani. After this, Deepa again gives birth to a baby boy, who is christened Vikramadhityan (aka Vikram). Prakashan and his mother feel elated and pamper him, while they choose to hate Kalyani and consider her a mere worker, sending her to sell milk at a tender age.

Years later

Kalyani is now a young woman. Though mute, she is talented and intelligent, but still longs for her father's affection. In her childhood, Kalyani had saved the life of a rich boy named Kiran. After a long gap, Kiran tries to find out who the girl was; this elates Kalyani. He meets Kalyani and becomes fond of her kind, calm nature. Eventually, he decides to employ her as a cook in his construction company. In the end, both fall for each other; Kiran then abandons his fiancée (and cousin) Sarayu. Kiran doesn't know that Kalyani is mute and thinks that she is silence fasting. Kalyani decides to reveal the bitter truth to him. Kiran is shocked, but forgives her and decides to transform her into a bold young woman. Sarayu is heartbroken that Kiran has left her and becomes jealous of Kalyani. She vows revenge on Kalyani. Sarayu's parents Rahul and Shari support her in this.

Vikram, Kalyani's cunning brother, is a spoiled brat who falls for Sonia, a wealthy girl who is revealed to be Kiran's sister. Vikram discovers her wealthy status and tries his best to attract Sonia, but all in vain. Vikram discovers that Sonia is an art lover. Since Vikram does not know to draw, he requests Kalyani to draw a picture for Sonia. Unfortunately, Kalyani does this without knowing why. He gives it to Sonia telling her that he drew it. At last, Sonia is attracted to Vikram and they make love. Sonia becomes pregnant with Vikram's baby. When she tells this to Vikram, he ignores her, and eventually she decides to attempt suicide, only to be saved by Kalyani. Prakashan doesn't want this marriage to happen because Sonia's uncle, Rahul, is Prakashan's enemy. Rahul feels the same due to his enmity towards Prakashan. So Prakashan demands that on the eve of the wedding day, Rahul must wash Prakashan's feet, or the marriage will not happen. This infuriates Rahul, so he decides to kill Vikram, who is saved by Kiran, who protects Vikram from Rahul's goons for the sake of his sister. Rahul also plans to marry Sonia off to Baiju (a meek man) so that no one will question Rahul's authority. Kiran and Sonia object to this. Meanwhile Vikram is thought to be missing, which horrifies Prakashan. They try their best to find him but fail. The marriage between Sonia and Baiju is fixed, and Kiran promises Vikram that he will bring Vikram to the ceremony. Indeed, Vikram arrives on time and marries Sonia, foiling Rahul's plan. In fact, Kiran and Sonia don't know that Vikram has pretended to know how to draw to gain her attraction and her wealth. Vikram also manages to open an interior design department in Kiran's company (with Kiran's help). Vikram uses fraudulent methods to continue to conceal that he is not an artist.

Kiran introduces Sonia to Kalyani, who gets along well with her. Sonia supports Kalyani against all the problems she faces. In order to ruin Kalyani's life, Rahul, Vikram and Ratheesh (Kadhambari's husband) team up and again hire Baiju to marry Kalyani, much to Kalyani, Deepa, Sonia and Kiran's dismay. Prakashan also accepts this, as he always wanted Kalyani to be married off to any physically disabled man or any older man. (Prakashan had been planning to marry her off to Rajappan, a loan shark who lent money to him.) Sarayu and her mother Shari rejoice that Kiran would now marry her and not Kalyani. Kiran and Sonia are trying their best to destroy the marriage plans between Kalyani and Baiju. Meanwhile, Kiran and Sonia's courageous niece, Paru, enters Kalyani's life. She stands by the side of Kalyani and throws tantrums at people who disturb Kalyani, which leads to many hilarious events. She makes Kadhambari work all day; one night, she scares Ratheesh, Prakashan, and his mother with scary dolls.

Paru calls Prakashan Kaduva (tiger) and calls Prakashan's mother Moonga Muthassi (owl grandmother) to taunt them, to Prakashan's dismay. She also hates Sarayu and calls her Ettukaali (spider). Paru expresses that she wishes Kalyani to marry Kiran, helping to arrange a ceremony in 'Thevar Kaavu' to unite Kalyani and Kiran. To separate Kalyani from Kiran, Rahul reveals that Kalyani drew pictures for Vikram and that he is really not an artist. Kiran becomes angry at Vikram and eventually at Kalyani. Kalyani and Kiran part ways, and the ceremony gets cancelled. She also starts working only at the company's construction sites to avoid meeting him. But Kiran soon realizes that Kalyani wasn't the real culprit and that Vikram misused her for his own benefit. Kiran tries to talk with Kalyani but she refuses, since Kiran's mother (Roopa) has her to not see and talk to Kiran again. On the other hand, Kiran taunts Vikram for betraying his sister and manages to keep it as a secret from Sonia.

Kiran now loves Kalyani more and wants to help her. Meanwhile, he disbands her from the construction site as it was worrying for him to see her work as a daily wage labourer. But Kalyani and her friend Lindaa misunderstand this in a wrong way and Lindaa advises Kalyani to be stronger than before and she gets a job at a small restaurant. She makes good food and helps the old lady in the restaurant. By then, Kiran arranges a job for her as an interior designer in a reputed company called Sony Ray as she was an excellent artist. Because of this, the interior section of Vikram gets backlogged as Kalyani's company gets more works than Vikram. She gets a good amount of money as salary, gets a diamond necklace and even a two-wheeler as a gift from her company(which was actually gifted by Kiran unknown to Kalyani). Kalyani's lifestyle changes much but she still remembers Kiran but never tried to meet him. Prakashan gets furious on her change and tries to torture her again but She acts bolder now with the support of Sonia and Paru. She is well accepted by her co-workers and is loved by the staffs because of her intelligence and kindness. Once, Baiju comes to flirt with Kalyani, enraged, she brutally assaults him. Baiju realises that he cannot marry Kalyani and decides to treat her as a friend.

Meanwhile, Shari and Rahul inform Roopa about Vikram's true colours. Shocked, Roopa collapses and is rushed to the hospital where Rahul lies to her that Kalyani was drawing pictures for Vikram to attract Sonia. This intensifies Roopa's hostility towards Kalyani. Vikram is in a fix as his company was totally on a loss and it was shut down and is compelled to celebrate Sonia's birthday as a husband with his own money. However, Vikram is in a need of money. He approaches Sonia's family who rejects his request, while Kiran and Roopa taunt him. But Kalyani lends Prakashan money for the party via his friend which is revealed later in the party due to which Prakashan lashes out from the event. Meanwhile, Roopa decides to fix the marriage between Kiran and Sarayu but both Kalyani and Kiran are sorrowful. But on the eve of the wedding, Sarayu gets chickenpox. After this too, Roopa tries to fix their marriage secretly unknown to even Kiran and Sonia. On the other hand, Paru leaves for an important surgery and Roopa considers this as a good chance for the event as she was against the marriage and tells about this to Kalyani who feels helpless. However, Kiran finds out the secret planning and asks about to Roopa which ends in a heated argument between Kiran and Roopa which ends up into Kiran lashing out of his home and meeting with an accident due to high speed driving. Roopa realizes her mistake and changes her mindset. She agrees to the marriage between Kalyani and Kiran much to the dismay of Rahul, Shari and mainly Sarayu. Sarayu puts up an act before Roopa and Kiran that she has changed and she is ready to marry someone else. She shares her plan with her father and he brings Raj Mohan, a criminal and a fraud. Kiran is excited to marry Kalyani. However, he is worried if Roopa would get to know Kalyani's disability. Meanwhile Sarayu assigns Anas to kill Kalyani.

Kiran reveals to Roopa that Kalyani was the one who saved Kiran from the childhood incident. Roopa changes her mind, and likes Kalyani more thank before. Roopa fixes their wedding and gives her ancestral ornaments to Kalyani as a gift. Shari is enraged and opposes the marriage. Even though angered by Roopa's actions, Rahul and Sarayu act good in front of Roopa and Kiran and support the marriage. On the other hand, Prakashan becomes jealous as she is going to marry Kiran and accuses her for the loss of Vikram. Rahul, Sarayu try to ruin Kalyani's marriage. Kiran arranges a job for Prakashan on Kalyani's request for which he gets rupees 1 lakh as advance but Prakashan lashes out as he sees Kalyani. The owner of Prakashan files a complaint against him. Prakashan threatens revenge on Kalyani and Kiran.

He sneaks into Kiran's house, and removes the brakes from his car. The next morning, as Kalyani and Kiran meet up again to travel, Roopa stops them from entering the car, saying that the car has slight issues and must be taken to the mechanical centre for repair. After they leave, Roopa calls Vikram to take the car to the mechanical centre. Unfortunately, Vikram suffers a fatal accident. The doctor reveals to Prakashan that Vikram has lost his voice as the seat belt injured him, this infuriates Prakashan. Despite reaping the effects which he had sown for his own, he lashes out at Kiran who visits Vikram at the hospital and blames him for the accident. Meanwhile the matter is unknown to the family and Kalyani suspects something is amiss. However, the truth is revealed, shattering all. Prakashan blames Kalyani for the accident and beats her up.

An enraged Kiran blackmails Prakashan by showing him the footage of Prakashan sneaking into his house and removing the brakes. Prakashan begs Kiran not to reveal the truth. Kiran, agrees on the condition that Prakashan be polite to Kalyani. However he acts like polite to kalyani but he is angry in mind.

Trying to remove all sadness from her mind, Kalyani is assigned a project and has to travel to Kanyakumari along with one staff member. Kiran plans a surprise for Kalyani by travelling to Kanyakumari along with Baiju and Paru. However, Sarayu finds out and hires an assassin to murder Kalyani. Kiran surprises Kalyani and organises a party. Kiran gets a call from an anonymous number warning him that Kalyani's life is in danger making him scared and anxious. He tries to protect Kalyani in every circumstance. However, the assassin enters Kalyani's room and tries to murder her, but Kiran and Baiju save her and beat up the assassin who reveals that Sarayu was behind all this making Kiran shocked.

Later, Sonia enters labour and is rushed to hospital by Kalyani and an unknown man, who is revealed to be Chandrasenan, Kiran's estranged father. Chandrasenan and Roopa split due to some issues and Rahul "kills" Chandrasenan, but he is rescued by people. Rahul and Shari doubt whether Chandrasenan is alive.

Sonia gives birth to a baby girl after Chandrasenan saves her by blood donation. Prakashan does not accept the baby put his mother seems to have changed her ways. Vikram pretends to be loving towards the child.

During the Noolukettu ceremony of the child, Roopa invites Chandrasenan and Kiran and Sonia wish to invite Kalyani but Roopa tells them not to because Sarayu had revealed to her that Kalyani is a mute girl from birth. Roopa hates the disabled and develops instant hate for her because she lied to her about her silence-fasting. Kiran threatens Prakashan to invite Kalyani or he will show the footage to everyone. Prakashan agrees meekly and talks with Roopa.
