Nomination of Anthony Appleyard by Xavexgoem

- Anthony Appleyard (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)
Anthony Appleyard is a long-time editor with some impressive DR experience. From what little I've seen (his contribs go back to 2004), he has shown himself to be an extremely competent and clueful administrator well-versed in the policies and guidelines of WP. Just recently he mediated the 2-month long Eulsa Treaty move dispute to great success.
He wants to be a mediator, and given his long and impressive history, that should be enough. We'll see from his answers if he has what it takes, but we know the answer to that already.
Questions for candidate
[edit]- The first five questions are the 'default' questions asked of every candidate. Members of the Committee may pose further questions in this section, and should sign any questions they add.
- What are the core principles of formal mediation?
- Neutral point of view. Ability to see the dispute from all sides. Not getting excited or angry when seeing accusations and flamage in discussions. Ability to wade through screenfuls of repetitious sidetracky arguing. Knowledge of the field of what the dispute is about, if it is something needing specialized knowledge.
- Discussions during formal mediation are privileged, in that they cannot be used against the parties in later proceedings (such as Arbitration or a Request for comments). Why is it important that this is so?
- So that the mediator can feel free to answer without fear of later reprisals, same as parliamentary privilege for discussions in the UK Parliament,
- What prior experience do you have in resolving disputes on Wikipedia, and how will these experiences help you to be an effective Committee member?
- If your nomination is successful, how active do you anticipate in being as a Committee member? Unless you are appointed to serve in another capacity, such as on the Arbitration Committee, will you be mediate a case at least occasionally?
- I am retired, so I will be free on weekday daytimes except when outdoor non-computer summer activities compete for my daytime time. (I am in England; I am teetotal and I do not habitually go out in evenings.)
- If appointed to the Committee, will you be willing to subscribe to the Committee's private mailing list, to regularly lead the (small number of) e-mails that are exchanged over the mailing list each month, and actively participate in discussions?
- Yes
Discussion of candidacy
[edit]- General discussion of the candidacy should go here, rather than on the talk page. Community opinions on the merits of the candidacy are especially welcome, and should be made in this section.
- (Chairman comment) This nomination has been open for 12 days, and attracted 4 supports and no opposition or negative comments. In 48 hours, absent other developments or objections from the other mediators, I'll be closing the nomination. AGK [•] 00:32, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Voting
[edit]- Members of the Committee should support or oppose the nomination in this section, with a rationale if appropriate. If a candidacy attracts two or more negative votes, it will be declined.
