Lena Katina

Lena Katina (Russian: Елена Катина) (born on 4 October, 1984 in Moscow) is one of the two members of the Russian pop duo t.A.T.u. the other being Julia Volkova. She is known for being the "good girl" of the duo.

Childhood

She is the eldest of three children, and the only child of both Sergey Katin, a renowned Russian pop music author, and Inessa Katina. Her younger, half sister Katya has a different father and her brother Ivan has a different mother. She was raised religious and is a practicing Russian Orthodox Christian.

In 1994 she joined the famous Russian children's ensemble "Avenue". She was part of it for three years, and at age 13 was selected for "Neposedi", the most popular and prestigious children's chorus at the time.

Lena has also studied artistic gymnastics, ballroom dancing, figure skating, swimming and horseback-riding. She is also a skilled pianist and is left-handed.

She has stated in a 2006 Telehit interview that she used to listen to such artists as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Pink Floyd when she was young.

Career

Katina was the first to be chosen for the music project of Ivan Shapovalov and Alexander Voitinskyi. The songs she recorded on her own before Volkova joined her to form t.A.T.u included "Yugoslavia". Part of the demanding contract of the band required Katina to shed nearly 10 kilograms. Being a Russian Orthodox Christian, she has expressed much awkwardness and guilt in having to pretend to be a lesbian for the group's image.

Katina stated in a 2006 Interview on Telehit that her parents were unhappy when she decided to become a singer, and that her father had no influence on her decision.

Katina also has done various solo singing since t.A.T.u. was formed, both for the group and for herself. On September 23, 2005, a Finnish fan won a contest for dinner with t.A.T.u., he asked Lena "I heard you made some solo stuff." She then responded "Yeah, I'm doing solo stuff."

Katina speaks Russian fluently and English well enough. She enjoys reading; especially romance novels. Lena also likes to play the piano during her free time. While Lena did at one point study Psychology at an unknown institution in Moscow, it was reported that while doing promotion for t.A.T.u.'s new album Dangerous and Moving, she has been demitted from the academy. Her mother had applied for academic leave for what would be the 3rd time, but was turned down. She then went on to major in economics.
