QualCoder is an open-source, qualitative data analysis software designed by Colin Curtain from the University of Tasmania. It allows for qualitative data analysis of text, images, audio, and video.[1][2][3][4]. The Qualcoder is based on Python programming language and is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux[1][3]. It is ispired by and draws from the RQDA R package[5].

Functionalities

The QualCoder functionalities include, e.g.[6][1]:

  • text coding,
  • images coding,
  • audio coding,
  • video coding,
  • creating of cases,
  • creating of attributes,
  • writing memos,
  • writing journal notes,
  • coding reports,
  • node graph creation,
  • file and code summaries,
  • coding comparison,
  • code relations analysis,
  • code frequencies analysis,
  • code comparison by file,
  • generation of charts,
  • SQL statements,
  • merging projects,
  • importing surveys.

The QualCoder implemented exportation and importation of codebook through the REFI-QDA format[7]. It also implemented exportation and importation of whole research project through this format, however, it was not fully tested[6].

Contribution to research

The QualCoder was used in a number of research published in peer-reviewed journals, including research on Functional Communities[8], mental health services[9], self-adaptive systems[2], English language learners’ communicative repertoires[10], populist discourse[11], and pharmacists experience[12].

It was demonstrated in "Field Methods" journal paper that the QualCoder can be used in low-cost qualitative methodology for meeting the needs of researchers from the low- and middle-income countries[13]. Moreover, the QualCoder was recommended for online and Internet research[14] and can be used in game analysis[15].

A number of university libraries recognized the QualCoder in their research guides, including the New Your University Libraries[16], the University of Washington Health Sciences Library[17], The University of Illinois Library[18], George Mason University Libraries[19], and University of the Free State Library[20], as well as the East Tennessee University Research Computing Services[21]
