The 2022 AFL Grand Final will be an Australian rules football match contested between the Geelong Football Club and Sydney Swans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 24 September 2022. It will be the 127th grand final of the Australian Football League (AFL), staged to determine the premiers of the 2022 AFL season.

Background

Round-by-round ladder positions of the two teams
during the season.[2]

Geelong entered their 2022 campaign after a demoralising 83-point defeat to eventual premiers Melbourne in the 2021 preliminary final. The Cats were inconsistent early, starting the 2022 season with five wins and four losses, but would not lose again for the remainder of the home-and-away season, earning their second minor premiership in four seasons with an 18–4 win-loss record. Geelong outlasted Collingwood by six points in a thrilling qualifying final encounter, before booking a second grand final appearance in three years after thrashing Brisbane by 71 points in the first preliminary final.

Sydney were coming off a heartbreaking one-point defeat to crosstown rival Greater Western Sydney in the previous year’s elimination final. The Swans built on their promising 2021 campaign, improving to finish third on the ladder with 16 wins and six losses. They defeated reigning premiers Melbourne by 22 points in the second qualifying final to book their first preliminary final at the SCG since 1996, before holding off Collingwood by one point to return to the Grand Final for the first time since 2016.

The two teams met only once in the regular season, in round two at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with Sydney winning by 30 points and Lance Franklin kicking his 1,000th career goal with six minutes remaining in the match.
