"Shut Down" is a song by South Korean girl group Blackpink that was released on September 16, 2022, through YG Entertainment and Interscope Records as the second single of the group's second studio album, Born Pink.[1]

Background

On July 31, 2022, a teaser video was uploaded on Blackpink's social media accounts, announcing the release of a new album in September, preceded by the pre-release single "Pink Venom" on August 19.[2] On August 24, YG Entertainment announced that the four members of Blackpink were filming the music video for their second album's title track at a site in Gyeonggi Province in South Korea.[3] The label stated that the group was preparing for their world tour and comeback stage: "they are working hard on a schedule to fulfill their promises to their fans," the statement noted, adding that "all the songs on the album are the crystals that will write a new story for Blackpink, but the title song in particular will be a song that will surprise world music fans. The music video will also elevate the status of K-Pop with a difference that has never been seen before”.[4]

On September 6, 2022, the title poster for the second single, "Shut Down", was released on Blackpink's social media accounts.[5]

Composition

"Shut Down" described as hip-hop based track mixed with strings and an insistent bass sound.[6] It samples the main theme of the well-known classical piece La Campanella, originally by Niccolò Paganini.[7] YG Entertainment noted that "The title is intuitive but strangely tense. 'Shut Down' is a word that means the closure of a certain space. We look forward to introducing you to the new story that Blackpink will reveal".[8] "Shut Down" was composed in the key of C Major with a tempo of 110 beats per minute in a compound meter, running for two minutes and 57 seconds.[9] Lyrically, the song sees the members clip back at their haters. Elle's Erica Gonzales wrote that "throughout the track, the girls take turns telling their haters and doubters to take a seat".[10]

Promotion

Blackpink held a countdown party on September 16, through their YouTube channel, to commemorate with fans, revealing snippets of the new album and to spoilers about their upcoming world tour.[11]

Commercial performance

'Shut Down' placed on atop of Spotify Songs Global Chart. This is the second top song after the pre-released song 'Pink Venom' on August. As a result, Blackpink became the first K-pop artists to have two songs that entered the charts.[12]

Music video

A teaser for the music video was released on September 13, 2022, and the official music video was released on September 16, 2022.[13] The video features references to previous music videos by Blackpink.[14][15]

A scene in the music video where Jennie raps while sitting on a diamond-encrusted tank, referencing “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du”.

The opening shot of “Shut Down” features Lisa standing on a deck against a dark sky, referencing her scene in "Playing with Fire". Then, Lisa takes the wheel for a group car ride, mirroring a scene from “Whistle” where Rosé was at the wheel. The scene in “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” of Jennie rapping on top of a military tank with pink shopping bags is also recreated in the music video. Lisa raps sitting among black bags full of pink cash and speakers, a replica of her “Boombayah” rapping scene. In "Shut Down", Jisoo protects herself from raining money with a pink umbrella, which parallels her scene with an umbrella in "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du". Just as in "Whistle", Rosé is shown sitting on top of the planet Earth, except now the globe is colored black and pink. In another scene, Rosé drives a car solo, referencing her doing so in "Kill This Love". In "Playing with Fire", Jennie plays with a match with orange flame in a white bathtub; in "Shut Down", she does the same but the bathtub is onyx and the fire from the lit match is pink. In the music video, Lisa wields a sword with the word 'Blackpink' and Rosé swings on a chandelier, both direct callbacks to "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du". In “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du”, Jisoo trips and falls in front of paparazzi filming her every move, whereas in "Shut Down", Jisoo confidently snaps pictures of herself without the glaring eye of the photographers. For the chorus, the members dance in an alley filled with posters referencing the titles of the girls’ solo and group songs.[16]
