Women Electronic Literature Writers Task Force

Hello and welcome!

The WikiProject is an inclusive initiative to create, update, and improve Wikimedia content pertaining to the lives of cis-gender and trans-gender women who are notable as scholars, activists, critics, and practitioners in electronic literature.

Electronic literature is a broad field, more or less described as a work of literature that uses an electronic element (such as images, navigation, sound, games, art, virtual reality, social media, and on and on) as an integral part of the meaning. This is a broad definition, and we want to be inclusive.

How you can help

This will be a multi year, multi person project. Our eventual goal is to document the biographies, works, journals, literary criticism, etc. for the women involved in this field. Our first baby steps are:

  • Upload CC-licenced images to MediaWiki to showcase electronic literature (screenshots, etc.)
  • Add the list of 400 women we have already identified to wikidata with their metadata (birth, school, occupations, works, honors, etc.)
  • Gather and add a list of references about electronic literature writing to wikidata
  • Gather and add the list of works by these women to wikidata
  • Improve the entries for women already in wikipedia [[1]]
  • Write new Wikipedia entries about works of electronic literature with at least three reliable independent sources about each work. Then add pages about their authors.
  • Make a template for this project that we can paste into the talk page of relevant entries.

It is a mammoth task. And a critical task. Electronic literature has grown with the advent of computers and sprawls across many genres (game, art, music, mysteries, criticism, non-fiction, poetry, novels, etc.). Please join our efforts--let's start eating the mammoth one bite at a time. Or taming the mammoth one edit at time--whichever metaphor you prefer.

Community events

We host monthly events where we work together on specific tasks. Our 2022 line up is:

  • Thursday Sept 15 Let's image. Find your phone, grab your computer, and upload images that showcase electronic literature for wikipedia. These will need to be allowed into the Creative Commons, and we will find homes for the images.
  • Thursday October 13 Grab your shelves. Let's grab whatever references we can and add to our own spreadsheet of 400 or so women--who is missing? What are the references we should use?
  • Thursday November 13 Wikidata fun. Using our list, we can explore ways to add these women to wikidata.

Note that these hour-long fests are only the beginning--getting our toes wet. If we get even a few images and references and wikidata entries, it is a start!

All are invited to contribute and join in our activities. There are many ways to help and no specialized knowledge of content or editing is required.

The WikiProject organizing committee meets on the Third Thursday of each month at 4 pm UTC. Here is a page that will convert that to your timezone. If you would like to participate in these meetings contact LoveElectronicLiterature.
