Damar Romeyelle Hamlin[1] (born March 24, 1998) is an American football safety for the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Pittsburgh and was selected by the Bills in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

During his second season in 2022, Hamlin collapsed and went into cardiac arrest after delivering a tackle.[2] CPR was administered to him before being rushed to the hospital.[3]

Early life and education

Hamlin was raised in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. He attended Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[4] He was named first-team All-State and the Class AAAA Defensive Player of the Year.[5]

College career

Hamlin was considered a top cornerback coming out of Central Catholic and was recruited by multiple major college football programs.[6] He enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh to play college football for the Pittsburgh Panthers. He played in three games as a freshman before suffering an injury and redshirting.[7] As a redshirt freshman, he recorded 41 tackles with one interception in nine games played.[8] Hamlin led the Panthers with 76 tackles and two interceptions as a redshirt sophomore and was named honorable mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). He had 84 tackles with ten passes broken up as a redshirt junior.[9] He was named a team captain going into his final season and was named second-team All-ACC after leading the team with 66 tackles and seven passes broken up.[10][11]

The Buffalo Bills selected Hamlin in the sixth round with the 212th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.[14] He signed his four-year rookie contract with Buffalo on May 21, 2021.[15] After playing a reserve role his rookie season, Hamlin became one of the Bills' starting safeties in 2022 after Micah Hyde suffered a season-ending neck injury in Week 2.[16]

In-game collapse

On January 2, 2023, during a Week 17 NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football, Hamlin collapsed after tackling wide receiver Tee Higgins. Higgins led with his right shoulder, which hit Hamlin in the chest. Hamlin then wrapped his arms around Higgins’ shoulders and helmet to drag him down.[17] Sources described the tackle as seemingly routine[18] while noting the jarring nature of the contact.[19][20] Following the play, Hamlin stood up momentarily before collapsing on his back.[19][20][21] As he remained motionless, team trainers and paramedics rushed to his side within 10 seconds.[22] First responders initiated CPR and administered defibrillation to Hamlin on the field for 10 minutes.[23][24] Hamlin was also given oxygen and administered an intravenous solution (IV).[23] Hamlin was then placed on a stretcher and an ambulance came onto the field as most of the players from both teams came off the sidelines to kneel or stand around Hamlin. After being transported to University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center at roughly 9:25 p.m. EST,[25] he was reported to be in critical condition[26] and was intubated. In accordance with the NFL's emergency-situation rules,[27] the game was suspended with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter and was postponed shortly after 10 p.m., about one hour after Hamlin collapsed.[28][29][30]

Later at 1:48 a.m. local time,[31] the Bills reported that Hamlin had initially suffered cardiac arrest and his heartbeat was restored on-field.[2]

Reactions

The lights on Paycor Stadium were lit blue in honor of Hamlin, following his collapse.

Following the collapse, numerous NFL players and teams quickly offered their support and prayers on social media.[32] Tee Higgins offered his condolences to Hamlin's family, as did Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen urging people to "[p]lease pray for our brother".[33] Fans began gathering outside the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center following his collapse. The lights on Paycor Stadium, the location of the game, were lit blue in honor of Hamlin.[34] The lights on the Fifth Third Bank's headquarters on Fountain Square were also lit blue in honor of Hamlin.[35]

Personal life

In 2020, Hamlin started organizing annual Christmas toy drives in his hometown of McKees Rocks.[36][37] Shortly after his in-game collapse, the GoFundMe campaign for his 2020 toy drive, which had an initial goal of $2,500, started receiving a massive influx of donors, raising over $3 million in donations in a matter of hours.[38][39]
