This category identifies the remains of original ships and boats preserved in museums as opposed to intact Museum ships which the public can tour or replica ships, which are later recreations of ships replicating original construction techniques and styles. Preservation of ships and boats in museums ensures that ancient and historic vessels are preserved for posterity in optimum conditions and are available for academic study and for public education and interest. Maritime and local museums may also choose to display ships and boats, that are not notable individually, but which illustrate local shipbuilding or sailing traditions.
