Temu, LLC is an American-based online marketplace. It is a "cross-border e-commerce website with most products likely to come from overseas, especially China. It is a subsidiary of Chinese-based PDD Holdings Inc., who also own Pinduoduo.

History and business model

Tem is owned and opreated by PDD Holdings, which also owns Pinduoduo, a popular social commerce platform in China.[2] Through WhaleCo Inc.[3][4] Temu is labeled as headquartered in Boston. The platform first went live in the United States in September 2022.[5]

According to Wired, "Temu’s bargain prices are an experiment in cutting out the middleman, by allowing Chinese vendors to sell their products directly to US consumers, and shipping directly from China rather than building out a network of US warehouses."[6]

A TechCrunch story reported that Temu was the most frequently downloaded app in the United States from September 2022 to early January 2023. The growth was fueled by extensive online advertising, with over 8,900 ads on various Meta Platforms websites such as Facebook and Instagram. [7] Online reviews indicated significant customer dissatisfaction, including "scammy listings, damaged and delayed deliveries, incorrect orders and lack of customer service".[7]

On February 3, 2023, Temu launched in Canada.[8] Also in February 2023, the company launched its first Super Bowl Spot.[9]
