Anupgarh district(in Hindi ज़िला अनूपगढ़ and Rajasthani जिलो अनूपगढ़, in Punjabi ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਅਨੂਪਗੜ੍ਹ )is a new proposed north-west district of Rajasthan state in western India.It will be carved out of Ganganagar district.[1]Anupgarh,Gharsana and Rawla tehsils of the Ganganagar district will be parts of this new district.The Raisinghnagar tehsil and Khajuwala tehsil can also be included in this district.

It will be surrounded on the north by Ganganagar district, on the south by Bikaner district, and on the west by Bahawalnagar district of Pakistani Punjab. This area lies in the Thar Desert. Thorny shrubs and sandy dunes are the basic characteristics of this region. Kikar(Acacia), Aak (Calotropis procera), Khejari (Prosopis cineraria), Khimp (Leptadenia pyrotechnica), Lathiya, Laana and Booiin (Aerva tomentosa), Tumba(Citrullus colocynthis) make natural vegetation of this area. According to experts Rawla area is enriched with fertile soil for crops. Chuna rocks are assets of this region. The waters of Ghaggar canal and Ignp canal has brought changes to flora and fauna and agriculture of wheat, mustard, cotton, Guar, pulses and Jawar has given a composite form of sandy dunes and green fields. This region with Gharsana is called cotton-belt but now things are changing. Average annual rainfall has fallen dramatically in the last few years. Since key source of irrigation is canal-water, water supply is inadequate for agriculture. Now many farmers are moving to a new trend of irrigation by tubewells. Anupgarh city will be the headquarter of Anupgarh district . Anoopgarh/Anupgarh has an average elevation of 155 metres (508 feet), and is very close to the border with Pakistan.

History

The ancient name of Anupgarh city was Chugher. Chugher (Anupgarh) and its surrounding area was occupied by Bhati rulers. The area occupied by the removal of Bhation Bikaner Maharaja of the princely state under the leadership of chef Bikaji Anoop Singh Sun in 1678 built a fortress whose name was Anupgarh.ref name="Singh">Singh, Rajvi Amar (1992).
