2019 interview clarifies the time line: this was philanthropy and was before SpaceX

Here is an interview shot about two weeks ago, where Elon Musk is talking to NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine about his original idea, from back in 2001 before SpaceX was even conceived.

Musk says he wanted to fund "a philanthropic* mission to send a small greenhouse to the surface of Mars."
