Schwarz is a common surname, derived from the German schwarz, meaning black.

Its variants include Schwartz, Schwarts, Schwarze, Swartz, Shwarz, Schwarcz, Szwarc (a Polonized version), Shvarts (from the Russianized Шварц). In the United States, Schwartz is ranked 432nd in the list of most common surnames, Swartz ranks 1332nd, and Schwarz is 2567th. [1].

It is a common Ashkenazi Jewish surname [2], often of those descending from middle class German or Russian Jewish families. [citation needed]
