development

[edit]

Hey this is just a rough start of an article. Help developing in any way would be appreciated.

One issue is whether Eli Whitney II mentioned as owner of site, was in fact Eli Whitney, Jr., inventor of the cotton gin and interchangeable parts. The Eli Whitney, Jr. article mentions that his grandson was Eli Whitney IV. Working backwards, seems it would mean Jr = II. --doncram (talk) 04:57, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just guessing, but I think the site owner is far more likely to have been the son of the inventor of the cotton gin -- see this link, which calls him "Eli Whitney, Jr.". The son (bprn 1820) is the Eli Whitney who was long associated with the gun factory and water plant located on land adjacent to Edgerton. --Orlady (talk) 21:18, 28 February 2010 (UTC) By my reckoning, that would make the first Eli "Eli Sr.", the inventor of the cotton gin "Eli Jr.", the son of the inventor (who should by rights have been Eli III) confusing called "Eli II" or "Eli Jr.", and the following generation "Eli IV" (correctly identifying him as the 4th generation). --Orlady (talk) 21:21, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
