I've added a reference to a tech report I just published on the history of the elastica (which will become a chapter of my PhD thesis). I'm happy if people adapt that into this article, but probably won't have much time to do it myself. Mathematical principles omitted

I don't know much about elasticas, but I have read that, subject to certain boundary conditions, they minimize the integral (with respect to arclength) of squared curvature.
