From http:// travel.mapsofworld.com/brazil/ natal-&-recife-tourist-attractions/kahal-zur-israel-synagogue.html:

Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, Recife is one of the renowned Natal Recife Tourist Attractions. The city of Recife gets plenty of visitors all round the year. There are lot places that are worth visiting in Recife. The visitors can keep themselves busy throughout their stay in this fantastic city since there are a lot of things to do in Recife. The tourist spots of the city are quite popular among all the travelers coming here. There are some very good beaches as well, where the tourists can try out some beach activities as well. The presence of very good communication facilities allow the travelers to move around the city very comfortably. The Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, Recife is an important tourist attraction and the travelers coming here must visit this place.
The present structure of Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, Recife, was constructed on the foundation of the original synagogue that was built in the year 1640. At that time Recife was ruled by Dutch rulers who were religiously tolerant. The Dutch rule of Recife ended in the year 1654 and with this many of the Jews went to New Amsterdam, which later became New York. The synagogue was captured and later sold. Later in the year 1990's some evidence of the old synagogue was found and that also in the form of ritual bath or mikve. The present structure was built after that and it is definitely not a replica of the old one. This was mainly built to honor the Jewish community living in Recife. The museum found here tells us about the history of the Jews, who used to live in Recife.
On the ground floor of the building the visitors will come across a temple that belongs to the 17th century. The second floor of the building has got the original synagogue. The people can get familiar with the Jewish tradition and culture, since a guide is available for the assistance of the visitors. There is TV lounge on the third floor of the building. Here a wonderful documentary along with English subtitles is played that is based on the history of the Jews, who used to live in Recife. There is some information about the rebuilding of the synagogue as well. At least one hour is required for exploring the synagogue properly.
