Stellar Stream Analogy?

[edit]

I don't really understand what a stellar stream is. Is a good analog comparing them to the rings of Saturn? When a moon or asteroid gets too close to a planet it gets ripped apart and makes a ring around the planet. So when a globular cluster gets too close to a galaxy, it gets ripped apart and makes a circle around the galaxy. Is that what they are. I really don't understand this.
