Images

[edit]

I believe this new article should pass muster for notability, references, and general structure, but I could use help with adding graphics. I do not know of any public-domain images of Ferguson, so I may need to try the "fair use" route, and I have one or two personal images that I need to upload to Wikimedia commons under a free or CC license. Graphics is new to me, so I also don't understand formatting.

Thanks, Finney1234 (talk) 17:37, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Finney1234 If you have personal images and are willing to release them under an appropriately free licenses, such as Creative Commons, please see the Wikimedia Commons Upload Wizard and follow the directions on screen. For help using the Commons Upload Wizard, see the frequently asked questions about the Upload Wizard. It follows that if freely licensed photographs exist (provided by you), the upload of fair use images will not be necessary. For more information, see Wikipedia:Uploading images and frequently asked questions at Commons. Vycl1994 (talk) 23:24, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Vycl1994 I don't have access to any public domain images of Ferguson, but there are some published images available, so "fair use" might be required there. I do have two other relevant images to upload under a CC type license (one is a photo of Mount Ferguson, another is a painting depicting Ferguson at Hard Bargain). Finney1234 Please upload fair use images directly to English Wikipedia by using the Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard. To upload to Commons, use the c:Special:UploadWizard. However, the freely licensed painting is preferable to any previously published and copyrighted images, pleas see WP:NFCC#1Vycl1994 (talk) 20:08, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Vycl1994 It turns out "public domain" is not as clear cut as one might think. I inherited the painting from my mom; it was painted in 1961, I am the owner, and it has never (AFAIK) been "published" in any form whatsoever. It does not fit the "70 years from artist's death" criterion, but I cannot figure out what effect the absence of any "publication" has on public domain (as far as I know, the original artist has no living heirs, nor is he anybody famous). Any ideas? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Finney1234 (talkcontribs)
@Finney1234: I dropped the ball on answering you, for which I apologize. I must also preface my statements with an acknowledgement that I am not a copyright expert of any kind. It seems that you did find a public domain photo of Ferguson with others via USGS, which releases its work under public domain as part of the US Federal Government. The fair use image of Ferguson is covered because it is the only solo photo of him you could find. Solely because the painting of Ferguson you own does not fulfill the "70 years from artist's death" criterion I would advise against uploading it to Commons, unless you can find information in personal or legal documents that the copyright of the painting has also transferred to you. OK, happening to look at this 4 years later: thanks very much for your accurate and helpful information! Finney1234 (talk) 01:10, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
