"Lack of Clarity"

[edit]

Noted this little squirt of text;

"The album contains extensive analogue overdubbing, as evidenced by a notable lack of clarity to the recording.[2] The songs "Deeper Understanding", "Never Be Mine" and "Rocket's Tail" all feature backing vocals by the Bulgarian vocal ensemble the Trio Bulgarka. The Sensual World went on to become her biggest-selling album in the U.S., receiving a Gold award four years after its release for 500,000 copies sold. In the United Kingdom album charts it reached the number two position.[3]"

Now, even the review notes state (rather obviously):

"A few things are worth mentioning. First, he had the mis-fortune to hear the CBS Lp release. Anyone who wishes to truly hear Kate's music should run out and buy British Lp pressings. The British EMI pressings aren't the quietest, (the Japanese are) but they are the most musical."

As such I am amending the comments, the judgement is ultimately based on a flawed item and distorts the entire piece (suggesting that the album, in itself, is 'wrong'). As a CD audio owner since release I can't say I've ever noticed any of the issues this single reviewer has (and something that isn't picked up on at all in any other review on the same page).Koncorde 11:26, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone who cannot hear the muddiness of the cd master is deaf. period. it is so obvious as to not be argumentative. Instead, it should actually be an entire entry of its own. Personally I believe the Sensual World is the most egregious example and likely because the original (James Joyce) lyric and vocal and all the atmospherics and EQ that accompanied it had to be totally removed to make way for an entirely new lyric and vocal. It is totally logical. It does not detract from the work, as evidenced by the admiration of such and the sales of such. It is simply noteworthy and you defend Kate at the expense of history and the art of audio recording. She can take it and it should be noted that the recording's analogue overdubbing sucks. period. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.42.47.219 (talk) 10:23, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is an academic argument at this point since this comment has been eliminated from the article and I have eliminated it from the main Kate Bush page, but the idea that the percieved "muddiness" or lack of clarity could in any way have to do with "analogue overdubbing" is a tremendous misconception. I would suggest that any lack of clarity might be a result of the very unusual, although very appealing, vocal sound that is present on most of the album, essentially a direct mic and a seperate room mic compressed at different thresholds and levels of reduction.
This was a pro recording at the height of tape technology. Overdubbing doesn't even enter into it. Maybe compressor abuse. Seanmercy (talk) 17:07, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
